Scoring All of My Classes for Fun

Wow, final blog huh. That’s crazy. Honestly I think this semester has really flown by and it’s crazy to think that I’m almost done with the first major stage of my life. However, on the topic of reflection, let’s take a look at what basically defined this semester for me, my classes! Against my better judgment, I will score all my classes out of 10 and just talk about my overall experience with each one. I’ll go in order of which period I have them in, and it’ll be great fun.

Period 1: Linear Algebra – 9/10

Linear Algebra gets an overall 9/10. I’ve always enjoyed my math classes not so much for the content, but more the environment of stressed out coping students that really makes it feel connected. I would also like to shout out Mrs. Moore for being a very cool and fun teacher and really helping to bring the package of ELA together as a whole for a very entertaining (albeit stressful) class. In addition, the conversations that people have at 7:00 am before class starts are actually some of the funniest things I’ve heard in my life. The only caveat is that I’m bad at linear algebra so 9/10.

ELA in a nutshell

Period 2: Film and Video – 8/10

Film and Video gets a solid 8/10. Now why am I taking film and video? Because in order to get into any of the UC system schools I needed two credits of fine arts in the same subject, and me being a moron took acting in semester 1 of freshman year (which was a mess), so here I am. However, I would say I quite like this class overall. It’s pretty chill, the teacher is very nice, the projects can be pretty fun, and overall it’s a very solid class. The only reason that I don’t raise it higher is because none of my friends took the class with me (because they’re not bozos who didn’t read the UC system requirements).

Period 3: AP Lit – 10/10 (of course!)

Now for my first 10/10, AP Lit. I actually had a lot more fun with this class than I thought I would coming into it. I really liked watching some of the films, reading some of the books, and the overall class environment. However, I would say the reason this gets a 10 instead of a 9 is because of the blogs. I’ve really enjoyed the blogs because I can write random stuff and have fun with things, and I really appreciate that.

Period 4: Physics C – 7.5/10

Physics C gets a 7.5/10 because it reflects my physics grade. I actually don’t think the class is too bad. Mr. Farrell, while albeit a bit inconsistent in terms of teaching quality, gets the majority of stuff done pretty quick and can be pretty funny. I have quite a few friends in the class that make it enjoyable(it’s the Linear Algebra situation of many stressed out coping students fighting for their lives). However, the reason why I don’t like the class as much is because I can’t understand electricity and magnetism for the life of me and I’m actually going to bomb my AP tests in a few weeks.

Me reading the first page of every physics exam (I couldn’t do a single question)

Period 5: Strength and Performance – 9/10

I give S&P a strong 9/10. I think having strength before lunch is really nice because once I’m done working out, I can go eat. It’s also a really nice break in my day and I get to hang out with Mohammad and Matthew Ru who are my favorite lifting partners. The only issue with the class is that it’s after physics and it’s pretty hard to resist the urge to drop the bar on my face after failing an exam (physics can end the pain of physics).

Period 6: Lunch – 9.5/10

I rated lunch a 9.5/10 because I actually have a lot of fun during my lunch periods. I’m a peer tutor so 3 days a week I head up to the Lit center, and I actually look forward to it a lot because we have some of the most ratchet conversations in that room when the days are slow so it’s great fun. I like normal lunch periods too, but the only issue is that I always have chem lunch so I don’t get as much time to chill and eat my food, but overall, a pretty good period.

Period 7: AP Chem – 9/10

I gave Chem a 9/10 because I actually really like the vibes. Despite chem being lowkey kinda hard this semester, I really like the people in my class and Mrs. Brucker is a great teacher who gets stuff done and has a good sense of humor to make the class quite enjoyable. I have nothing bad to say about chem this semester besides the fact that I have a skill issue in doing chemistry, but overall, really good.

Me on my way to turn in my lab with 472% error

Period 8: Blended AP Macroeconomics – 10/10

I really liked Macro this semester. The vibes are great, the people (mostly) are good, and the class isn’t that hard while also being pretty interesting, so all major pluses. Mrs. Barbino is a great teacher who manages to tame the very hectic 8th period nature of the class while also teaching well. Finally, this class is blended so like 20% of time, I get to go home early so major W’s there. Very good class that I would recommend everyone going through high school to take.

Overall, I had a pretty good time this semester. Definitely some rough bits where my grades didn’t look so pretty, and looking at my finals and AP schedule, I think I better buckle in for one last rodeo unless I want to fall flat on my face in the final moments which would be super embarrassing. Other than that, I would like to thank everyone for reading all my wonky blogs across a whole year, and I wish everyone the best!

  1. ey Alec,

Hope you’ve been doing well. For what will likely be the last AP lit blog and comment on, yours definitely did not disappoint. I loved hearing about your rigorous courseload and experiences in each class. I was most shocked by your 10/10 granted to AP Lit. Personally, any science and english class are ones I find the least engaging, so while I definitely woudn’t have given Lit a 10/10. Additionally, I’ve also experienced the roller coaster of a Mrs. Moore Calculus BC, however I am experiencing it in BC, rather than linear algebra, a second semester course I’ve hear to be significantly more difficult than MVC or BC. I think it’s definitely awesome that you enjoy applications of what you learn in the class. Furthermore, film and video actually seems like a pretty interesting class (that I’ve never taken). I was also appalled by the odd UC fine arts credit, which let me to having to take digital art 2 my senior year, leading to dropping a meaningful course such as Business Accelerator or Accounting. Overall, great job with this blog; I enjoyed hearing about your various,s scattered thoughts throughout the semester.

  2. Hey Alec! I know right? Only so many days before we graduate and I don’t think I’ll realize how significant that is until the start of summer which is quite sad to think about actually. I think these blogs are as best as assignments can be for an English class because it gives you freedom to write about anything you want which for the most part is what I believe English class should be like. You know how it’s hard to remember what you’ve been doing every day any more past than a few weeks? I actually tried to keep track of what I did every day during junior year in the month of September but I ended up getting tired of it and stopped unfortunately. But I still did it for a month and I can look back at it whenever if I want a dose of nostalgia, though I prefer to just move on with my life. I’ve definitely had some regrets on the classes I’ve taken over the years, but I think the experiences were still somewhat worthwhile. Although I wouldn’t be just as inflated as the scores you gave on your classes, I do agree with your experiences. Good luck to you in college!

  3. Hey Alec. This was an exciting way to write a somewhat wrap-up of the last four years. In terms of linear algebra, I could never get the 9/10 you gave. I am only in BC but I have not really enjoyed all of the math that has come with the course. I think it was interesting how you say the stressful atmosphere was enjoyable for you. For me, it was stressful because I just suck at calculus. I also liked your review of strength and performance because I have been a leader in PE for junior and senior year. I think it would have been cool to either take S&P or CTS in high school, but leader has also been fun too. I would have to give my lunch 10/10, especially this year. Off-campus lunch has been a blessing and we go to either my friend’s house or we go out to eat. Also, I was considering taking blended AP Macro and did not, so your 10/10 makes me regret it a little bit. Some of the class is difficult, but the blended would be cool to have. Overall, great blog and it was fun getting to read some of your blogs this semester.

  4. Hey Alec, I liked your blog. Given that I’m taking most of the same classes that you are (with the exception of Film and Video), I’ll comment on your rankings.

First off, I definitely agree with your rating of ELA. While, at first, I didn’t like the matrix-centric nature of the class, I’ve started to enjoy it. During the last test, I spent fifteen minutes glaring at the one proof before it finally clicked and I felt like a genius for the rest of the day. Mrs. Moore is by far the best math teacher I’ve had throughout high school, and the stress-culture is pretty funny. I really liked your rating.

I also liked how you rated Macro. While 8th period is probably her worst period of the day, Mrs. Barbino makes learning economics fun. From the applications of class content to current events to her willingness to give us blended (aka no work) days, she makes the class a blast. Whenever someone asks me about taking the class, I always recommend it.

Of course, your ranking of AP Lit was spot-on too. While I originally was not a fan of the blogs, over time, I found myself enjoying talking about anything and everything that I might want to talk about. It really helped me develop a comfort in writing.

  5. Hi Alec!

Oh my god this was a fantastic blog! I was debating that whole week when I was brainstorming on what to write about for my blog, writing about classes is such an awesome topic! I was just realizing how much I can talk and write about if it was about my classes. Anyway, reading about your fil and videos rating it appears that you are going to a UC school yeah? Congrats if you made a decision already! I agree with your 10/10 for AP Lit, I really like this class too for all the films and Hamlet we watched in class. The blog assignment were fun, although they are sometimes hard to write when I run out of ideas. But it was nice to take time to just write about anything in our minds! Similarly to you I would give physics a 7.5/10, that also reflects my grade in physics, not physics C though physics 1. Physics is just hard. It’s so nice that you have gym before lunch! Unfortunately you have gym after physics C, S&P seem like a really fun class and I have many friends that took that class. I however is in self defense. That is a lot of contribution being a peer tutor 3 days a week and doing chem in your lunch breaks, I admire how you manage time that well. And AP MACRO!!! You guys are the 8th period class Ms.Barbino talked about! I envy that you have blended Macro, but Macro is such an awesome class. Thank you for contributing to my blog comments! This was a great great blog!

  6. Hey Alec, love your blog! I thought the concept of ranking colleges to be really interesting. I’d agree that coping together is such a good way to make friends, especially during the first period when everyone is kind of asleep. I would say MVC was a 9, but ELA might be a 8.5 in my books.

Film and video ngl sounds pretty interesting! Personally I’ve been taking photography and it’s been super fun and refreshing (especially compared to all of my harder classes throughout the entire day).

I’m actually so glad I didn’t take Physics C and took software engineering instead: what I’ve heard from Alan and You and Justin makes it sound like such an awful class. I would also be super scared to bomb the AP test (pov not me failing both AP 1 and 2 tests).

Chem I kind of liked! Especially second semester when I think things were somehow more chill and I wasn’t getting bodied by every test on earth.

I would say Macro has been super fun too! I hated it at first (as I took like a 10% hit grade wise on tests compared to Micro) but after the Macro final I think there is less content which makes it better.

    Great blog!

  7. Hi Alec, I really enjoyed reading your post. First of all, I definitely agree with your ranking of Elementary Linear Algebra. Although it definitely wasn’t an easy course and rrefing matrices by hand can get really frustrating sometimes (especially if you make a small arithmetic mistake and don’t catch it until you’re almost done), the collaborative nature of the class really makes up for that — everybody suffers together. Plus, it’s a lot more fun than Multivariable Calculus because you can pretty much prove everything you need to know, which you can’t do in MVC (??? stokes theorem ??? ) so it definitely ends up making more “sense”. It’s also cool that you ended up taking a film as lit — as someone who loves movies, that class always interested me but I didn’t ever take it because my schedule was always full and I didn’t want to write essays on movies. This backfired on me, however, as I ended up with only 1 semester of fine arts and therefore could not apply to California schools. Aside from that, it’s been really fun having you in my classes for basically half the day (lunch, lit, chem, and strength) — you definitely saved me on more than a few labs in chem. Good luck in college next year!
