Tales from Quarantine

It’s crazy to think about how just a few days ago seniors were trying to find every excuse to leave school, and now I’m willing to bet most of us would sacrifice a lot to go back. I for one, know that my friends and I are already going a little stir-crazy sitting in the house all day with nothing to do but school and binge-watch Netflix. Probably because of this lack of activity, I’ve found that some crazy stories have already happened in the four days we’ve all been home. I’ve compiled some quarantine tales from my friends and me to hopefully make you laugh and take your mind off of this whole pandemic situation.

  1. Bean Tower/Crying Session Combo
    1. My younger brother is a freshman, so I’m lucky enough to have a partner-in-crime to do school with during the day. We’ve turned our dining room into a makeshift schoolroom, which is where this story takes place. Yesterday I was sitting doing (or rather, struggling through) my calculus homework when Jackson looks up and asks “Makenzie, what can I make a sculpture of? I have to do a ceramics project.” Naturally, I think about an item that we have an abundance of: cans of beans (we’ve really stocked up since this whole pandemic broke out). He went off and brought the cans of beans back into the dining room where he started to stack them into various sculptures. Meanwhile, I went back to my math and proceeded to start crying over it. Then, of course, my mom walks in to check on us and sees two very different situations; one of us was making bean towers and the other was crying.
  2. Cat Warding
    1. Many of your parents may have shifted to working at home, just like my friend Catie’s parents have. This definitely changes up the family dynamic, as everyone is now sharing one space. In Catie’s house, this new dynamic has come along with some new family roles. The most important new role in her house now is Cat Warder. The role is simple; when her parents are on conference calls, a person has to stand by and make sure their cats don’t meow too loudly. Clearly the cats are going a little crazy too because they continuously try to crash the conference call party with their loud meows. For the person on warding duty, this often means running the cats out of the room by physically chasing them. I guess we’re all just adjusting to the new norms, cats and people alike.
  3. Wrong Cheese
    1. This story isn’t that extensive, but I think it adequately represents the general brainwaves of us seniors confined to our homes. Libby made pasta for lunch, but to spice things up a little bit, she decided to make her own mac and cheese. Thinking she was a culinary genius, she combined American, Cheddar, and Parmesan cheese together. As it turns out, this is not a good combination. Actually, it’s a terrible one. Not willing to sacrifice her lunch, she struggled through and ate it all, even though she said it may have been one of the worst things she’s ever eaten. Sometimes, you just have to power through a sucky situation and make the best of it.
  4.  Impaled Father
    1. While in quarantine, board games have become a cutthroat pastime, literally. My friend Caitlyn was playing Scrabble with her dad, and it came down to the last round. She played a 128 point word (yes, 128 points. It was some very technical double word score, played all your tiles type situation), thinking she had secured the victory. However, her dad, who had one tile left, played a 28 point final play. Thinking she had lost the game for good, she threw a pen at her dad rather hard, accidentally almost impaling his eye. At the end of all that, it turned out that she won the game anyway, so her dad almost lost his eye for nothing.

I hope some of these stories resonated with you and some of the wacky events that may be occurring while we’re all stuck at home. Trust me, this whole situation isn’t fun for anyone, but the more we recognize the funny, goofy things that can happen while we’re all stuck at home, the easier it will be to stick this out. Let me know some of the weird, unfortunate, or just plain crazy stories that have happened to you in the comments below.

  1. I love this post. It’s good to find humor in our current situation, and I really adored your stories. The cat thing definitely reminded me of today when Matas and Stephanie showed off their cats in the conference call! Crazy things happen when we’re put in our homes with our families and close to nothing to do. My contribution: I’ve been on three conference calls today, and none of them were JSA-related, which my calls almost always are, so I consider that a success.

  2. I would like to say my culinary genius was a fail, I learned my lesson. It was a good try at least, well maybe not. But Kenzie I love this! I think it’s very amusing and I love that you’re making the most out of what’s going on. Loved hearing all of these stories (including mine).

  3. These stories were hilarious! I definitely related to “Cat Warding” because I do the same thing with my dog whenever my dad has a conference call or my parents have company over. And, I cannot even begin to tell you the pain calculus has caused me since we’ve switched to e-learning. I briefly wrote about it in my blog this week; it’s a struggle that I am happy we can experience together. I’m happy you have these fun, silly memories to take away from this strange period in our lives!
