Grab a Spoon and Dig In!

Hey bloggers! I’ve really missed writing these, honestly. It gets my mind active and also allows me to share my unimportant, yet controversial, opinions. Today’s topic: cereal.

You might be wondering where I got such an exciting and creative idea. I’m not quite sure, but all I remember is sitting in AP Lit, minding my own business when I heard someone trash-talking my FAVORITE cereal. It suddenly struck me, I needed to share my love of a very hated cereal – Raisin Bran. I then realized that would be the WORST blog ever, so I expanded my horizons.

Without further ado, I present to you (in no particular order…well, kind of) my favorite cereals!

Raisin Bran

Now, this may be a shocker to many, but raisin bran is my

all-time favorite cereal. Not only does the bran have a FANTASTIC texture to it, but the raisins are covered in the sweetest sugar imaginable. I am not one to ever enjoy raisins (in fact I find them disgusting), except for in a big bowl of Raisin Bran. It truly starts my day off right.

One other point I’d like to bring up is the sogginess in milk. Many people hate on this cereal for the soggy bran, but I am also one of those people that prefers dry cereal. Milk in cereal makes me nauseous, so here we are.

Raisin Bran is the ideal snack or meal for anyone who is seeking a delicious, but not terribly unhealthy meal. Also, I’m gonna say it…the bran will do wonders for all of your digestive systems.

Cocoa Puffs

This one is for sure a classic, as it pleases just about everyone. It is hands down the best chocolate cereal (none of that Cocoa Pebbles B.S. because those are disgusting and you know it).

When you take a good spoonful of Cocoa Puffs, you get such a good bite due to their size. They are crunchy, although they have a lot of air incorporated into them. As I mentioned earlier, I don’t like to have milk with my cereal, but if I do, Cocoa Puffs are my go-to because of how they make the milk all chocolatey.

If you’re looking for a classic that isn’t too risky, Cocoa Puffs are the best choice. They are great for all ages, and the simple ingredients and taste allow for even the pickiest of eaters (me) to enjoy!

Mini-Wheats

Don’t get me wrong, Mini-Wheats are by no means the best cereal, but the sugary coated pieces are unbeatable. The actual wheat part is kind of disgusting and tastes like cardboard, but the sugar!!!! You can’t go wrong with a nice bowl of Mini-Wheats, especially the way they soak up the milk (okay so maybe I do like cereal with milk sometimes).

Looking at the health aspect of cereal, Mini-Wheats are not nearly as terrible as some others (don’t get me started on Trix, they’re just straight sugar). Although the icing on each one adds to the health risks of each bite, that whole-grain base really makes you feel okay about what you’re eating.

If you’re looking for a sweet but filling afternoon snack, I’d recommend a hefty bowl of Mini-Wheats.

Cheerios

On the extreme health side of cereal, I’m a sucker for Cheerios. They are so simple, yet so versatile. Mixing them with fruits and even some honey? Amazing. I think plain cheerios with honey are the best, but only if I put the honey on myself (Honey Nut Cheerios are not it for me).

Cheerios are also my go-to food when I’m sick. When you get the stomach flu, you can’t really do anything except for eat crackers…or Cheerios! Cheerios are the ideal dry food that goes down easy but still tastes yummy!

Now although most people will reach for Honey Nut Cheerios when moseying through Jewel-Osco, if you’re looking for something that you can be creative with, regular Cheerios are your cereal!

Cap’n Crunch

I’m leaving this as my final cereal because although I do love it, I’m hesitant to include it on my list. As a child, I ate Cap’n Crunch constantly, and I love the taste of it, but the one downside is that it always seems to cut up my mouth. The jagged edges are not ideal, but the taste overpowers that.

Cap’n Crunch is probably my weirdest choice on here, but its spot is well-deserved. As a cereal enthusiast, I’ve always found that sometimes, you just get bored. I eat Raisin Bran more than I’d like to admit, but every once in a while I want something new and fresh. This is when I turn to a good bowl of Cap’n Crunch.

Cap’n Crunch is an odd cereal, as it has a very distinct taste, along with an even weirder texture. The actual shape of it also confuses me, so please let me know if you know why the cereal is shaped like that. After going through my other 4 choices, I realized I didn’t have a wild card. I had nothing too exciting until I remembered the joy of munching on some Cap’n Crunch.

If you’re looking for a change in scenery, this one’s for you.

After spending a lot of time researching and eating cereal in order to formulate a quality opinion and list, what I learned is that every cereal has it’s upsides and downsides, but with that, every single one is a great way to start your day off right, crunching away on a good bowl of whatever you want! (Except for Apple Jacks, those are disgusting.)

    • I appreciate the honesty, although I’d like to argue that most plain crackers aren’t necessarily tasty, but as I said, when I’m sick and absolutely CANNOT eat anything else, I love a good bowl of Cheerios!

  1. Erin, I have tried every cereal on your list except Raisin Bran , Cap’n Crunch, and Mini Wheats. Sorry for insulting your number one cereal during AP lit. I didn’t know Raisin Bran could actually taste good and I also disregarded the fact that it’s healthier for you. Did you know my mom was a big fan of Raisin Bran? Now that Raisin Bran is approved by more than one person, I’m more tempted to try it, ha ha. Also, after reading your blog, I understand why Cap’n Crunch is called Cap’n Crunch. I just thought it was a generic cereal for kids but the strange (super crunchy) texture and unique flavor has me intrigued and I’m excited to try that cereal as well. Mini Wheats don’t sound too bad from your description but the fact that it tastes like cardboard makes my heart cry. HOW CAN THEY DO THAT TO CEREAL!!!! Thanks for your insight on cereal! I’ll try stepping out of my comfort zone of honey bunch and cheerios by making a visit to the store some day!

    • Annita, you are absolutely valid in insulting Raisin Bran. It is (to say the least) a CONTROVERSIAL cereal. Everyone has their own opinions, and I must say, I am not one for crazy tasting things. If you noticed, all of my cereals are pretty darn plain…I’ve never been a big fruity cereal kinda gal, but to each their own. Mini-Wheats are so iffy because they’re amazing but their bottom layer is just flaky and dry. I appreciate your openness to trying new cereals now, and I can see your mom’s taste is quite similar to mine.

  2. I used to eat cereal all the time when I was younger because I was such a picky eater and I never ate what my parents served me. Of all of the years I have been enjoying cereal, Raisin Bran has never been one of my go to cereal choices. I always thought it was for older people who wanted to be healthier, but now I realize my ignorance. I think after reading your blog I will go straight to the store to cop myself some bran. Also, Mini-Wheats are delicious and without the sugar they totally do taste like cardboard. Thanks for your insight.

    • I really admire this comment because I was also an extremely picky eater, although I still am. Raisin Bran is so controversial, it actually inspired me to write this whole blog. Most people call me crazy for eating it! That “older people” healthy food for me is Special K, it seems so boring! Mini-Wheats are so amazing, although I cannot get past how well they fool you into thinking they’re all that. They’re just flaky with some icing on it.

  3. Hey Erin, I loved your blog! I thought that this topic was so fun and uniwue and I enjoyed reading about your top picks! I also love Cap’n Crunch and Cheerios. Honestly these cereals just remind me of my childhood. Almost every day I would eat cheerios or bring them to school to snack on… they are so yummy! However I am kinf od on the fence about Raisin Bran, I kinf of like it but kind of don’t. But maybe I should open up and try it again because who knows maybe my tastebuds have changed over the years! Nice Blog.

    • Hey Kyra, thanks for the comment! I completely agree with your tastes, as Cheerios are a staple in any child’s diet. As I’ve said, Raisin Bran is very controversial, hence why I hold no offense against who hates it, but I think it is very much worth a try!
