Just Logging Life

Eaarth By Bill Mckibben

on December 9, 2019

This book explains the visible and invisible effects of climate change and exactly what humans are doing to create these issues. Bill Mckibben explains that earth is our only home, no other planet is hospitable like ours so we need to protect it instead of ruin it.

He makes it pretty clear that global warming is not a future issue, it is now our present and we are almost to the point where it is irreversible. He starts the book off by explaining the harsh conditions we live in today, such as extreme weather, freshwater resources disappearing and numerous fires. Then he talks about politics and science and how our government is horrific at creating ways to combat climate change. He tells us how we can fix things and cautioning them to start small and stand together.

Finally, Mckibben tells us where we are with climate change, how to fix it and why we are here. He wants us to know that change is our only hope in fixing this fundamentally different world.

This book was very intriguing and has inspired me to become very aware of my impact on the environment. It has helped me to change some of my ways and follow better guidelines.

Bill Mckibben makes it pretty clear that he wants us to survive and not destroy our only home. He wants to inform us of our mistakes and remind us of how to fix them in the fast-changing world. He wants to help by changing the minds of others and encouraging us to stay together to create a better world that our grandchildren will be able to live in.

It is pretty evident that one person can’t change the world but everyone can definitely help. The scary part of this book was when Mckibben made it pretty clear that we all have to join together to save our planet. Although this will be almost impossible to do since people have different opinions, spreading awareness with always help.

When reading I found 3 main takeaways.

  1. Our earth is going to keep changing, we can’t keep pushing back the stop of climate change, it is here now and it won’t stop on its own.

  1. We are going to have to learn how to concentrate on essentials, scale back and join together to learn how to conquer the trouble ahead of us,

  1. Only some places around the world are helping their societies thrive, and these will be the only societies that live on if the rest of the world doesn’t take advice from them.

Climate change is becoming a very popular topic in today’s society. Protests and strikes take place all around the world and change is starting to happen. People are realizing and seeing the effects of climate change and are harvesting new ways to help our environment thrive.

In my opinion, change will come in drastic amounts eventually. But the stubborn humans won’t do much until it affects them directly, that will happen soon enough. What are you doing to stop climate change?

This is a very interesting perspective. Climate change is a very good topic to discuss in todays society, especially since there are now a ton of big factories and corporations that may abuse and destroy natural resources. It is very important that we also focus on using renewable sources of energy because we will eventually run out of fossil fuels to power the things we use. This is why promoting electric transportation is a very positive step to providing a cleaner and more eco friendly future. There should be some sort of regulation regarding the amount of fossil fuels companies can use and penalties against tainting the water supply and killing wildlife. There should also be a limit to the amount of deforestation that can occur yearly. All of these steps can protect endangered species and reverse some of the damage done by humans over the past one hundred years.

I read this book for AP Environmental Science and I’ll be hinest I didn’t like it that much. But reading your summary of book made me realize that I had missed a lot of information the first time I read.
