Ayesha’s Current Netflix Rotation

If you’ve seen any of my previous posts, you’d probably guess that I love watching movies and shows. You’d be correct- specifically on Netflix. Thankfully, this inclination isn’t something to be worried about yet, I mostly just watch when I have free time at night. Or whenever I feel like it. Ok now I will ramble about a few shows/movies that I’ve recently watched or am currently watching:

The Peaky Blinders:

I haven’t seen many period dramas but this really had me hooked from the start. I love shows/movies that have morally gray areas and this is a perfect example of one. Gangs are known to be evil, and as violent as they are, the Peaky Blinders are who you’ll be rooting for the whole time. Thomas Shelby, the leader of the Peaky Blinders, sees a chance to create business outside of crime. It’s fascinating to see the power of the gang fluctuate in the aftermath of WWI. Personal struggles are shown as well; many of the gang members and citizens of Birmingham were veterans and suffered from PTSD/other injuries, including Thomas Shelby. I also love this show because of the role of women. While men were often the face of the gang, the women are shown in a highly respectable light as they contributed so much, especially while the men were at war. I love how they’re all shown to have minds of their own, and their roles are extremely significant to the plot.

New Girl

The ultimate comfort show!! This show makes me feel super homey (especially because of the warm atmosphere of the loft) and watching it is always a “safe” option because I’ve seen it so many times. There’s nothing to be really surprised by. This doesn’t mean that it’s not entertaining; there are 7 seasons so it’s easy to find an episode you forgot about or haven’t seen in a while. I’m grateful that this is still on Netflix because they’ve been taking off so many old comfort shows like Friends, That 70’s Show (my favorite!!), and even The Office, although I wasn’t a huge fan of that show. Every single episode of New Girl is delightful and never fails to make me laugh. Plus, you can never go wrong with Nick Miller.

Total Drama Island

As embarrassing it is to admit, I was never allowed to watch this show as a child so I’m watching it now! It’s quite entertaining and I recently finished the first season. Now I’m on Total Drama Action, which I thought would be worse but it’s just as entertaining because the characters are all the same from the last season. Also, I always watch shows with captions on and I found it really funny that the captions diverge from the actual script of the show. Sometimes, a character will make a joke but the captions will have the non-PG version of it which kills me every time because I know small children have probably seen this in the past and thought it was wondrous.

The World’s Most Amazing Vacation Rentals

I swear, this show is going to make me change my career path to either a lifestyle blogger or a realtor. This is a travel series where a group of 3 friends chooses homes with the same theme- one person always chooses a budget home, one chooses luxury, and I’m not sure what the other one chooses, but I’m going to go with quirky. I’ve loved HGTV shows since I was young, and this show merges everything I could want in a home show. There are so many components of each property that are covered: design, furniture, amenities, eco-friendliness, travel, history, and even more. The show is mainly property-based, but not completely. No matter where the group is, the property enriches their experience which comprises of other activities and people. It’s so interesting to see how different kinds of homes highlight different aspects of a location.

Jab we met (2007)

Ok this is probably one of the most iconic Bollywood movies ever, but I recently rewatched it for fun. First off, I think the soundtrack to this movie is a hit/miss based on the song, but most are hits in my opinion. The plot is kind of basic in the beginning- a rich, depressed businessman (Aditya) meets someone who is the opposite- a quirky and spontaneous girl (Geet) who ends up turning his life around. The first half of the movie entails this plot and makes the movie seem predictable, but the second half really spices things up. There are multiple scenes where both Aditya and Geet think they have to let go of each other- you’d think they’d be corny but I appreciate them. This may be because Hindi is a beautiful language and the heartbreaking scenes are made even more descriptive/emotional because of this- captions don’t do full justice. Additionally, Bollywood always finds ways to turn RomComs into action movies so the middle/end is filled with some intense action scenes making it a really Spunky movie.

  1. I definitely clicked on your blog as soon as I saw the Total Drama picture attached. I also love watching movies and tv shows on Netflix, some may say that I watch a little too much and they might not be wrong. Peaky Blinders was only okay in my opinion, I definitely like the role that the woman had and usually love shows like that but for whatever reason I couldn’t get into it. I might have to try that one again though because that was a while ago and I never finished it either. New Girl is of course a classic and I love that show, always a good go-to for me. Total Drama Island is that show that me and my family will randomly start watching again from time to time randomly. The show is honestly weirdly bad and good at the same time and is always fun to watch again and bring back those memories. I have never seen the vacation rentals one but I have watched a lot of HGTV shows and enjoy those so I will have to give this one a try. I have also never seen Jab we met but I’m always up for a good RomCom.

  2. Ayesha,

I LOVE TOTAL DRAMA ISLAND!!!! It’s my second favorite cartoon (my favorite is King of the Hill). Total Drama Island is definetely one of those shows you can watch without really watching whenever you’re bored or have nothing else to do. I also remember watching it as a kid and was super excited to see it was put on Netflix. Speaking of childhood shows and movies, I remember always watching Monster House as a kid which they put on Netflix recently as well! If you haven’t seen the movie Monster House, you should add it to your list and watch during the break! I watched New Girl for a little bit but then got bored. I might try to get back into it before the end of the year. We’ll see!
