the grammy’s didn’t give: dress code? nobody knows

At this point in my AP Lit career, I think I’ve become more lax in regards to how outright I am in admitting that I didn’t do a blog post on time.

That being said, the Grammys just wrapped up, so let me share some thoughts on the disaster that was the lookbook and give a rating on some of the outfits we saw tonight. (Hence my disclaimer as to my blog post being late, because we all know that chronologically, the Grammys happened after our fifth blog post was due.)

Olivia Rodrigo: 4/5 stars

Starting off with: Olivia Rodrigo. Are we starting off strong? That’s debatable, but while this isn’t one of the strongest looks we’ve seen from Ms. Rodrigo, it’s certainly not the worst look on the carpet tonight, It’s also consistent with something we’d expect her to wear, so kudos to her for that. Do I love the dress? Admittedly, no, but I would also hate the dress a lot more if anyone had the audacity to wear it.

My opinion of the dress also changed drastically when I found out that it was a Vivienne Westwood dress. Suddenly, I understood the thought process my mother went through whenever she told me an average-looking clothing item’s brand name as if that would carry the clothing through to make it look better.

Doja Cat: 2/5 stars

Is this a bit of a controversial take? Absolutely. Doja Cat is an absolute baddie and queen of my heart, and she definitely deserved the Grammy she won tonight. But the combination of the hair and the dress just aren’t doing it for me, and the main factor carrying Doja through this look is her own divinity. Overall, it’s giving sci-fi futuristic Elsa gone wrong. The accessories actually weren’t that bad, but I was expecting a lot more from a Versace dress.

Dua Lipa: 3/5 stars

It wasn’t great, but it wasn’t bad. Basically, the look was okay, although that could just be the fact that a black color selection on the red carpet is generally very safe and formal and can’t really look bad. The entire fit feels like it would be more appropriate for if it was Halloween and you decided to be dressed as a Grammy (but make it sexy). So the look works for the event only because Dua Lipa used the color schemes of an actual Grammy award. She manages to both play it safe/basic with a slightly edgy twist.

Billie Eilish: 2/5 stars

Remember when I said that wearing black at a red carpet event can’t ever really look bad?

Yeah, I was wrong.

No shade to Ms. Eilish (pun unintended), but I swear I saw her wear nearly the same thing to the Oscars just last week. While in the past Billie has characterized herself via her baggy wardrobe, I think there’s a very fine line between just baggy versus trash baggy clothes. Unfortunately, tonight she leaned closer towards the trash bag area. The hairstyle and sunglasses were well suited to the look, however, and I can appreciate a spiky-hair look in this getup (this is not the case for our beloved Doja Cat’s look).

Michelle Zauner: 4/5 stars

This was cute! It was really cute. For MIchelle Zauner’s first time attending the Grammys, I applaud her for this look. It’s fun and out there while not being too out there. The way she’s smiling in this photo really compliments the whole look and is crucial in bringing in the key element of joy. I also adore the bow buns. All in all, this was a really refreshing look that provided some reprieve from the mahogany of looks that had me making the “yikes” face more than once.

You go, girl.

Lady Gaga: 2/5 stars

Lady Gaga. I ask you: why? You were meant to save us all from this fashion backwards night. I love you, O Lady of the House of Gucci, but this look was not it. This look was the less-glamorous, more bland version of something that Cruella de Vil might wear, and it was a type of classy that bordered on boring

This doesn’t mean I’m not looking forward to Lady Gaga’s Met Gala look this year, so fingers crossed and staying alert!

Justin and Hailey Bieber: immediately no. -10/5 stars

I cannot express the sheer, unadulterated rage I felt every time I had to look at Justin Bieber tonight. The oversized suit is not a look. This is a child who tried on their father’s suit and forgot to take it off before coming to the red carpet. Hailey Bieber, gorgeous as she is, is basically wearing the equivalent of one’s towel being wrapped around them fresh out of the shower. Maybe it wouldn’t look so awkward if it was fitted a bit better and she wasn’t leaning back so much.

Don’t even get me started on Justin’s shoes. Never did I think I’d be seeing army platform Balenciaga Crocs on a red carpet. And yet, here we are. Even more offensive is the fact that it still somehow looks like Justin is wearing the shoes backwards. Please. Stop this now.

Final Thoughts

I had no idea what the dress code was for the Grammys this year. Apparently, nobody in attendance knew what the dress code was, and watching this red carpet was like watching a costume party in high fashion gone terribly wrong. Someone apparently went in a dinosaur outfit. Either I missed it when I was grabbing a snack, or I was actually blinded by rage and blacked it out from my memory.

Hi Zea! I loved reading this blog. I enjoy watching the Grammy’s each year and I feel like this year was for sure a special one. The main outfit I agree with you on is Olivia Rodrigo. She looks good in anything she wears but I definitely agree that it could’ve been better. It was still a cute outfit so I would also give it a 4/5 stars. I would give Doja a higher rating that you just because I like how bold she was with the hair and not to mention it fits her well I would give it 3/5 stars. I agree with most of the rest but I would say this year wasn’t the best in the outfit department. I enjoyed this blog, nice job Zea!

Hey Zea!! This blog post was so cool and creative. I loved reading about your different ratings on these celebrities’ outfits. Your comments on Justin’s suit were absolutely hilarious and I totally understand what you’re saying lol Also, the “sci-fi futuristic Elsa gone wrong” with Doja Cat’s outfit got me🤣 I, too, don’t know exactly what the dress code was for the grammys. A bunch of the looks made me confused, but there were definitely some that I actually loved too. Love the post girl!!!

The way I can hear you saying this out loud! Leave it up to Zea to give us a Grammy fashion review — a thorough one at that! I definitely agree with all of your rankings in the blog. Olivia’s dress was fine but it definitely could have been better. Not going to lie, I might have given Lady Gaga 3 or 4 stars. I know it’s a bit cliche and overdone but in a way, it could almost count as a classic. Justin and Hailey’s were definitely my least favorites of the night too. Believe it or not, the first thing my sister said when she saw Hailey’s photo is that she looks like she has a sheet or curtain wrapped around herself. I’m so excited for the Met Gala edition of your blog!

Zea, I love your topic for blog post this week. Even though I know absolutely nothing about fashion, I do have some idea of what flies and what does not on a red carpet. I actually really liked Olivia Rodrigo solely because she is wearing Vivienne Westwood (can you blame me). I also want to say, I hated Billie Eilishes outfit as it’s giving wannabe Kanye. Michelle Zauner is so cute and she looks straight out of a picture book, however she could have done more with the shoes. Do not ask me who she is, however, because I do not know. Doja’s dress was just too current for me to enjoy. Dua Lipas outfit is suprisingly refreshing to me because it reminds me of 2009 in the most Lady Gaga way. Onto Lady Gaga, I loved it just because it was just very Lady Gaga. Hailey and Justin deserve to sit outside. Honorable mentions should go to Bts wearing cute matching suits.

    Zea!

I love this blog post! I always look forward to how the tabloids and other journalists rate the looks after award shows because most of the time I disagree with them. Looking at your ratings here, I unfortunately also have to disagree with some of yours as well. I believe that Lady Gaga looked very elegant and classy so I would rate her a 4/5. Additionally, Doja Cat looked STUNNING. I honestly can’t believe you gave her a TWO! I love the sheer bottom of the dress and think it’s super unique. I’d give her a higher rating of a 5/5. I do however agree with you on the rating for the Bieber’s. It was not it. Hailey looks like she’s wearing a bed sheet, and Justin… I don’t even know what that is tbh.
