Atheism, Part 1: The Story

How a majority of Atheists view Theists (more specifically christians in the instance above. “The Instance” being an interview in the O’Reilly factor)

I know, I know. Bad topic!

Religion is something that is personal to many people & that’s why people take offense to it. I get that. What I don’t get is how people could be so overcompensating when it comes to comfort. I know that belief in a supernatural being (or a multitude of them) is comforting. I’ve been there too. I liked the idea of a powerful friend whom I could rely upon, just like the Russian people with Putin.

So…… What happened? Well, I realized that god did not exist. How? Flashback time!

Rewind the tape eight years ago. 11 year old me in India. Visiting a temple. My family & I were paying our respects to the chief deity of our people, the Malayalis (if you don’t know, it’s one of the many ethnic/regional groups in India, that’s an oversimplified answer but I wouldn’t want to confuse any of you more than you would be). I was with my family in a queue. Not too bad, right? Wrong. Now remember this is India, so there is no shortage of people. The “queue” was say about 500 people in an area double the size of the learning commons. Yeah. I got fed up. I ducked under the metallic rail, full Mission Impossible style & made my way to rescue. I realized how dumb the move was. Great! Now I’m separated from my family. I was distraught. I ended up doing what most people would do in that situation- freak out & pray. After a while, my parents came out & found me. I got quite the scolding which would’ve verged on an ass-whooping had it not been in the public (that’s how Asian parents be). This whole mess made me convinced that “God” was not going to help me. Dude was probably high or something. Imma help myself. Who needs god?

That set me on a path to Atheism.

Now I know that Atheism gets a bad rep in society. We’re portrayed as satanist, heavy metal listening heathens or potential grounds for re-enstatement in religion (like many of the movies show). But I’ll tell you one thing- Once you see the truth you can never go back. Religion is a bunch o’ fairy tales. God, religion or praying does not give you any purpose in life or any comfort. You yourself do! You are the greatest work of nature. Your brain was sculpted by evolution & nature so that you could reason. Not conjure up an unreasonable fiction. Please don’t abuse your brain. Respect it.

Now you might say- “Oh but what could possibly replace religion?”. One word answer- Science. I know, I know. Dry, bland ol’ science? Yes. I am intrigued by people that claim Science will never hold the wonder that religion does. Well guess what? Science can possibly explain everything in this universe! Take that. & If THAT doesn’t give you comfort then remember this-

Religion will quabble, Science will debate. Religion will squabble, Science will engage.
