Procrastination. Instilled within even the best of us. But why do we do it? I know for a fact, I mean beyond a doubt kind of fact that procrastination breeds within me, causing more and more procrastination each second I’m writing this blog. I mean even while I’m writing this I’ve been switching between youtube and Netflix and trying not to do as much homework as possible. But why?
We grow accustomed to the idea of coming home and doing school work, and I know especially for me, watching TV or being on the computer was not part of that routine. Every day I would get home from elementary school and it would be school school school and then once you finish we can go to the library or you can stay home and read. Now weekends…those were the days for cartoons and for TV duh! WGN9 for those OG’s out there who know what I’m talking about.
But once we hit middle school, it starts to change. We realize that those around us, or I for that matter, have been watching TV, or taking breaks and doing what they want once they get home. It isn’t that linear pattern they’ve been following their entire life and they never will. There’s always something more fun to do. I mean I finally got a phone in middle school so I didn’t have to sit around by the landline to call someone if I wanted to go outside and play with them, I could sit and text about life.
As written by a New York Times article on the topic, “Procrastination isn’t a unique character flaw or a mysterious curse on your ability to manage time, but a way of coping with challenging emotions and negative moods induced by certain tasks — boredom, anxiety, insecurity, frustration, resentment, self-doubt and beyond.” I honestly think that description really hits the mark for most of us. We come home, only to face the same prospect again of sitting in front of a computer screen at a desk doing work with no stimulation.
I think as of right now, a lot of us are struggling with the idea of Senioritis as well. I mean, we’ve only got a couple more weeks left. This idea of self doubt is definitely starting to surface among us as we try and grasp what we’re going to do with the rest of our life and what we should take away from what we learned in high school. But we can’t keep it with us forever.
I, like you all, am tired. It’s the reality we face after 12+ years of school. But if you guys ever get worried, just remember that for some of us we only have 4 years left, and for others, we have 8 maybe less. But you can’t ever forget that we have completed more school than we ever will. Even with procrastination.
Procrastination gives us the feeling of being human, of realizing our mistakes too late and thinking we’re going to fix them, only to realize it feels too good to procrastinate. The countless times I’ve gone, hm I’ll just wake up tomorrow morning and do this, I’m sure is a reality that you guys have faced as well. But we will learn. Some day we will learn and we will finally fix this one mistake we all have made, even the best of us.
Just a couple more weeks guys, and we’re almost there.

Hey Sivaayan, I really liked your argument here! I think it’s very interesting that procrastination is one’s way of coping, it seems very counterintuitive at first, but then begins to make sense. For me, procrastination is about the thrill; turning in assignments at 11:54 with an 11:59 due date can be quite stressful, but it’s also such a high to say that I completed it in the nick of time.

Hey Sivaayan, I really enjoyed this blog and the deep dive into procrastination. Like many I have been afflicted by this disease throughout my educational career and have found it increasingly difficult to focus on getting my work done fast. It is much easier to push off the worries of doing all of your work than to sit down and get it done early.
I’ll write the full comment once I finish this show…
JK. I do think it is a problem and can be annoying as at least for me. I hate having things I have to do in the back of my mind while trying to enjoy myself. It is a much better feeling getting my work done early as then I feel like I am ahead (which is rarely the case). It is definitely nice to know that we are almost done with school and college will at least be a change of environment even though the workload will likely be not so fun. Thanks again for sharing I will be trying hard to overcome senioritis and finish strong this year.
