Living with your elderly Grandpa could be a tedious job when it comes to helping him eat, staying clean, brushing his teeth, and building his ionic defibulizer so his interdimensional cable box stays in-tact. Yes, having the worlds smartest scientist as an alcoholic grandfather could lead to some spontaneous but very troublesome times when you’re a 14 year old teenage boy trying to find your way in life. Rick and Morty is a TV show that airs on Adult Swim and Hulu about a young boy named Morty and his older best friend named Rick, whom he happens to be related to. The two split their time between regular household lives and constant interdimensional travel; all thanks to Rick’s most prized possession- the Portal Gun. This gun has the potential to bring one to any universe imaginable in the blink of an eye, using the power of a substance known as anti-matter. The only problem with this anti-matter is that every known creature in the universe is after it; and Rick is the only one powerful enough to tame it. Being the only one obtaining such abilities, with great power comes great responsibility – sometimes…
In his early years, Rick was depicted as kind, adventurous, and open-minded in the one episode we got to see of him as a young adult. This was right before his wife and child were killed in an unfortunate accident due a faulty invention. After this day, he vowed to dedicate his life to science out of frustration and desperation of his loss. He protects the universe (and especially his grandson) because he has nothing else to protect, but will use his power for the worst if it benefits his greater good. He will never go on a mission by himself with the portal gun, whether it be saving the world or simply going to an alien arcade light years away to play games with Morty. Morty doesn’t have much say in where the two journey to, he is mostly just along for the ride. This is except for the few times Morty gets to choose, or completely messes something up that Rick then has to fix.
Morty uses his grandfathers abilities the same way any other kid his age would. In one of the most renowned episodes of the series, Morty asks Rick to create a serum that will make his crush fall in love with him. Obviously it works, but it works a little too well. The serum ends up being contagious which causes everyone in the area and eventually the whole world to turn into flesh-eating animals tearing apart the city in search of Morty. Rick then has to come to the rescue, get him out of the area, and transport them both to a whole new identical reality because their previous planet had been completely destroyed. This is just a prime example of how using your power with greed can lead to a horrible chain reaction that you didn’t want in the first place.
Rick and Morty has been one of my favorite TV shows for years, which leads me to give it a 10/10 review. This score is given based on its creativity, extreme originality, and crude humor that maybe not everyone would understand. The show does a great job of making you want to be right there with both Rick and Morty, going on adventure after adventure with no care in the world. If you are looking for a funny cartoon series where every episode is original with little story line behind it, you’ve found a great show to binge watch every so often. Each episode is only around 22 minutes so it is very easy to sneak in an episode or two when you have spare time. There are 3 seasons in total with 10 episodes each, with another 5 releasing starting on November 10th, 2019.
