What Is A Life Quote?
I first started collecting Life Quotes in seventh grade. It started at a winter retreat but soon grew into something more.
A Life Quote is a funny line that I think is quotable and memorable. I have been writing and collecting Life Quotes just as a way to remember a funny moment or just something I found intriguing. It might be something a friend tells me, a random conversation in the hallway. Mostly it’s my Latin teacher who would daily tell the best stories. But through all of my journals, with quotes from all different people, I have found a lot of great life advice. Here, I hope to share them with you and pass down the knowledge that I have gathered from these great Life Quotes.
“It’s A Crunch Toast Day”
My youth group went on a retreat that year where the theme was “Uncommon” and to tell you the truth, it was a pretty uncommon trip. I distinctly remember that they mixed up the meals. For breakfast, they served dinner; for lunch they served breakfast and at dinner they served lunch (which is kind of the same thing, because you can make whatever you want for dinner and it’s acceptable). For breakfast on Saturday, we had turkey and gravy. It was at this moment that I realized why we have general breakfast foods. That morning I wanted nothing more than some cereal or a nice waffle, instead we were given a Thanksgiving meal. I do not recommend turkey and gravy for breakfast.
The speaker at the camp was talking a lot about how life can’t always be perfect because we are imperfect people. He made the comparison like this: some days, are crunchy toasts days. The butter is perfectly melted and the toast is crispy and makes a crunch when you bite down. But there are some days that are like soggy toast days. The bread is all soggy because the butter has been sitting on it for too long, it isn’t warm or fresh–it tastes terrible. There are also burnt toast days when life just doesn’t work out the way we plan and everything is going wrong.
My friends and I loved this quote and established it as the first official Life Quote. That weekend, we kept saying, “It’s a crunchy toast day”. My Instagram bio for a long time was “It’s a crunchy toast day”. We wanted to live everyday like it was a “crunchy toast day”.
I must say, it is hard to keep this attitude. Junior year of high school was a huge struggle in keeping this “crunchy toast” mind set. I felt like everyday was terrible and wasn’t going to get better. I thought my life was over and that I was not going to pass junior year. But something I learned was that in order to make it a “crunchy toast day” I needed to stop looking at everything so negatively. I found that by looking to God, I could get through any soggy toast or burnt toast kind of day.
What I found from this, is that with God, there are crunchy toast days. But not all the time. There are days that everything just seems to be falling apart and you wish it would just end. In those times I can look to God who will provide comfort and peace in those whirlwind days. The Bible talks about not being anxious about anything and that in all situations to pray (Phil. 4:6) “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Phil. 4:7). God can turn a soggy toast day into a crunchy toast day.
Now, I have lots of days that I consider “crunchy toast days” and I cherish every one of those days. And as for the soggy toast kind of days, I rely on God because He is where I find my peace and comfort.
As for others, I understand that God isn’t always their peace and comfort. I think that having a “crunchy toast day” is still possible. It’s all about mindset. When I’m talking negatively to myself or to a friend, I force myself to start naming positives about my day. I think of everything that went right. Suddenly, the sun starts to shine a little brighter and the toast gets a little crunchier.
We’re not always going to have the perfect day that we imagined but at least it’s sufficient. We wouldn’t be able to learn if it wasn’t for the soggy toast kind of days. It’s important that from a soggy toast day, we learn how to grow and turn those moments into crunchy toast moments.
I think we should all try and live our lives as crunchy toast days. What’s the point if we’re always having soggy toast days? And if you’re not a toast person, maybe find another way to make your days brighter. There are always solutions around us, it’s all about finding them.
For now, I really hope you have a “crunchy toast day”.
