Sit Back and Relax…

Most of my blogs have been very serious lately and so when brainstorming for this one, I wanted something more lighthearted. So, what is more lighthearted than some TV shows?

It’s always nice to be able to kick your feet up and enjoy your favorite show. Whether that be after a long day or just for the hell of it. I, myself, am not a big TV show person but every once in a while I find myself completely entranced over a show and cannot stop watching it. Therefore, I thought it would be fun to name a few shows that had me head over heels and why.

So without further ado (in no particular order)….

1. Gossip Girl

Ok so yes I am falling into that stereotypical girl who loves her shows about high school drama but hear me out. The six-season, 121 episode show, Gossip Girl, progressively gets more and more complex as well as mysterious. Airing in mid-September of 2007, the show hit the ground running. For those of you who don’t know, this show is all about the one-percenters of NYC and all their problems. However, a new boy enters the picture who is not from their circle but somehow gets on the inside. As the show progresses, love triangles are thrown about and bratty high schoolers turn into malicious revenge seekers. This show is more than petty high school drama. It dives deep into the abuse of power by the wealthy. Broadcasting the use of drugs, power, and money with Gossip Girl, a blog by an unknown source that develops in the midst of this, showing off the flaws of all these high schoolers and their drama, as well as their parents. Now there’s only so much I can tell you without spoiling the show but what I can say is that this show is more than just a basic high school story, it has a little bit of something for everyone.

2. Grey’s Anatomy

Ever feel like absolutely everything is going wrong? Well, you don’t have the worst of it. The writers of Grey’s anatomy love a troubled soul and will throw anything and everything at their characters to make sure this is achieved. The show is 16 seasons and counting and each and every episode presents a new issue. A group of doctors journeys through both their medical and personal lives together throughout the show but every episode has a new case for them to solve medically, simulating the fast pace of many ER surgeons. Now I am only halfway through this series at the moment but I can’t seem to tear my eyes away from the screen. It seems like every character can’t quite seem to get their feet on the ground. However their medical practices make it seem as if they are god-like. This show is not for the faint-hearted either. There has been anything from poles sticking through people to massive tumors in a young child. The makeup team for this show also ensures that one needs a brave stomach to indulge in each episode. I would recommend this show for someone who likes adventure with a lot of drama because it has plenty of both.

3. Sex Education

Let’s talk about sex. Yes, that painfully awkward topic we all dreaded talking about in school. Well, that awkwardness has been perfectly recreated and molded into the show Sex Education. Coming out early January last year, this show is relatively new but already has two successful seasons. Set in the UK, this show is based in a home where a sexually “stunted” (for lack of a better word) teenage boy lives with his mom who is, ironically, a sex therapist. However, he finds his own talents for therapy in this field when teenagers at his school become troubled and have no one else to turn to. This show is great for a laugh but also is able to juggle some more serious topics such as LGBTQ+, healthy relationships, and lower-income families. This show is a great way to get invested in characters and enjoy their painfully awkward teenage experience.

4. The End of the F**ing World

Awkward shows are somehow so enjoyable for me and this show is no exception. There is little to no emotion at the beginning of The End of the F***ing World, the first season features two outcast teenagers who leave their hometown and families in search of adventure. However, their adventure isn’t quite legal, considering it starts with stealing a car. This show is all about finding what makes life worth living. These two kids deciding to not conform and leave their community helps them see what this is for them. However, once they entangle themself in their adventure, they realize that they aren’t as ready to be on their own as they thought. This show is a fun adventure with a unique tone. The repressed emotions by the characters reflect onto the view making it a very chilling experience at the beginning and shifting to a heartfelt one at the end.

I hope you enjoyed these recommendations for some shows. I tried to find some that everyone could enjoy but maybe try branching out and indulging in one that you previously wouldn’t. Just remember, it never hurts anyone to relax every once and awhile.

    Hey Elly,
I love this post! I agree with you that it can be a perfect way to relax. Unlike you, I’m a huge TV person and I watch more of it than I probably should. Gossip Girl is one of my favorite shows. I absolutely LOVE drama shows, and GG is a classic that everyone needs to watch at least once.

On the other hand, Sex Education keeps popping up on Netflix as a recommended show but I never really considered it. From your description it sounds like a funny and different show, so I think that I might give it a try.

Thanks for your recommendations, I’m always looking for my next show to watch!
