Ok, so I’m not in psychology. I don’t plan on taking it either but there is one thing I’ve always wanted to understand. Why do we dream?
I’m not talking about those goals we have when we’re older, as great as they may be. But when your head hits that pillow, your eyes close, and you drift off. Ever have that falling sensation that jolts your entire body? Me too. But why?
The weird part is I’ve had dreams that have stuck with me since I was a kid. I would try to explain them but I could do no justice to the images inscribed in my head. The point is that the stories, the images, are so clear. I could see my brother, or I could see my house like I was living it. But you know what’s really weird, I’ve never seen myself. My dreams are all centered around me yet I seem to be missing from the picture. Isn’t that kind of weird?
What about thoughts, where does that little voice in your head come from? How do you sound when you talk to yourself? When you read? What generates that voice in your head?
Your opinions about other people, your memories and everything in between falls in your thoughts. What keeps them in there? Why don’t you don’t just say everything you’re thinking? See it would be fun to think it’s like there is another you, but in your head, controlling you. Or would that be scary? I’m just thinking out loud here, but not really (it’s in my head).
I’d love to tell you that I could answer all these questions but there’s no way I could.
There’s a lot I can’t answer but there is a lot I can do.
We spend our whole lives with these kinds of questions. But realistically, how often do you think about why you dream or think? Don’t you just do? Actions matter. Actions matter more than thoughts, more than dreams. The deliberate way that we carry ourselves, interact with others, now that has meaning.
So how did I get from dreams to actions? Well, if you want the full reason then go to http://www.guidetopsychology.com/dreams.htm, but in short, what you dream about can be a reflection of what subconsciously is bothering you or something you’re thinking about. We use our dreams and thoughts as some kind of a safety net, where our true feelings hide. That’s why all those movies about someone being able to read out minds are so freaky. We get comfortable with our minds, hiding what we truly think or feel.
So I have a question for you, one that you CAN answer.
Is it good to hide our true feelings?
Now I know that no one asked, but in my opinion, no. If you don’t like someone, say it. Why be fake? Isn’t that more energy? It’s better to know who your true friends are, to feel comfortable confronting someone if something is bothering you. And yes, I know that’s terrifying. We tend to hate confrontation, we want to be liked, it’s human nature. Think though, what would it be like if we were honest. We wouldn’t worry about how someone feels. If someone loves you they would tell you. Our hearts, our feelings, our opinions, all lay in our heads. So it’s good to ask questions, to figure things out but also the action is the only real way to figure anything out.
So tell me, (if you plan on responding to this) what are you thinking right now?
