Why You Should Visit Destin, Florida!

While remote learning can be extremely frustrating for some, especially during our last year together in high school, it has provided many with the opportunity to learn in a variety of different places. The fascinating element of this year is that no matter the location, we are all able to come together and learn as one, while adjusting to the new normal that has taken over our lives. For myself and my family, we were extremely fortunate to be able to travel to Destin, Florida for a couple of weeks during the month of October for a tropical vacation getaway.  While there, the island charm was undeniable, leading to this location being one of my favorites among all of my travel journeys, keep reading to discover why!

First and foremost, there are numerous activities that are unique to Destin, making this location a must visit for anyone of all ages and interests. The Big Kahuna water park offers a vast array of water slides and tubing adventures, a perfect opportunity to have fun with friends or family. In addition, there are jet ski rentals open to those staying at all beachfront properties along the beautiful emerald coast. The rentals are offered between the months of February and November, with a slight period where they must close up shop during the winter months due to the dropping temperatures. While open, increments of 30 mins or one hour are offered, with riders being allowed to drive the jet skis at age sixteen, contrary to other states that require drivers must be eighteen. This is an extremely fun option whether it be spring, summer, or fall and would be the perfect fun filled day during a senior break trip with friends!

Not only are there numerous activities along the beaches, there are also many restaurants filled with mouthwatering seafood and traditional southern style meals. One of these restaurants is the beachfront dining establishment, The Back Porch, offering everything from the picky eaters’ favorite chicken tenders, to the most elaborate seafood plates. Following dinner, my favorite dessert was the key lime pie, as it was refreshing and topped off with sweet and delicious whipped cream. In addition, if fast food is more of your go to, there is a Chick Fil A within walking distance of many of the beachfront condos, as well as a Waffle House, a restaurant exclusive to the south with all of your breakfast favorites!

In addition, Destin is approximately thirteen hours away from Naperville, meaning it is up to the visitor to make it a road trip adventure or a speedy flight. This time, my family chose to drive, and what began as a lengthy, and somewhat boring journey turned into hours and hours of beautiful sightseeing. As we passed through the beautiful rural mountains of Kentucky, and eventually into the bustling cities, it was a great experience to witness contrasting regions of our country. I thought it was cool to see other places I wouldn’t usually have the pleasure of passing by in our Naperville “bubble” so to speak.

Finally, one of my favorite aspects of Destin is the prominence of condos as rental properties for both owners and guests. The lack of big name hotels, and the inclusion of private properties which radiate beautiful island charm give Destin a unique vibe when compared to other cities in Florida. Each condo is decorated from the heart by the owner, and each has its own individual flair and unique decorations. For most of the properties, the site VRBO is used to find available condos, as well as amenities, special features, and pricing. Overall, I would one hundred percent recommend visiting a condo in Destin, as it provides a fun, relaxing, and unique experience, brought together by the friendly island goers and amazing properties.

Finally, all of these reasons and more are all you need to consider Destin for your next vacation spot. It is a location  filled with fun, family, and friends, and somewhere everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime. I promise you will love it!

  1. Hi Kelsey,
As a former Florida resident I remember fondly the beautiful beaches and numerous amusement parks that used to be within a 30 minute drive of my house. However, while living there I had never gotten the chance to go to Destin. Based on your glowing review of the location and what it has to offer I definitely want to go. Hopefully next time I travel to Florida to visit my friends there we will be able to go on a roadtrip to Destin and enjoy all it has to offer!

  2. Kelsey,

I loved your review and recommendation to visit Destin, Florida. It was so refreshing to read something about visiting Florida that wasn’t Disney, which is ironic coming from me since my blog is basically dedicated to Disney at this point. Your blog was super informative and gave the just right amount of information to get the reader intrigued to read the rest of it. From the entertainment options to the food available, all of it made me really want to visit this destination. I haven’t been to Florida in ages and reading your blog gave me that hint of sunshine that I otherwise wouldn’t have got in this covid age. I also liked how you mentioned that the lack of big hotels since so many times vacation spots can get overcrowded because of the large hotels but thanks to your information I now know that this area shouldn’t be overly crowded as other vacation spots. It was also really reassuring when you talked about the 13-hour drive and how it wasn’t super boring. Normally, that is one of my biggest fears when traveling for a long distance is that it will be tedious and boring but your blog reassured me that there will be lots of interesting and beautiful sights to see to keep me plenty distracted. Overall, I really enjoyed reading your blog and will definitely keep all this information in mind if I ever head back to the Florida area soon.

  3. Hey Kelsey,
Although online schooling has been unfortunate in a variety of ways for students, it’s exciting to see ways in which people take advantage of the new opportunities online school provides. I wish I was able to go on a vacation during the middle of the school year and not miss out on any work or fall behind. I hope someday I’m able to experience such an opportunity as your trip to Destin during an otherwise busy time of the year. Personally, I’ve been to Florida a few times in my life, but never to Destin specifically if I’m remembering correctly. Your post makes this place sound very interesting, I’ll make sure to visit the city the next time I travel to Florida! Great post!
