Since it’s officially past Thanksgiving it’s officially time to start worrying about gifts, I thought I’d bring up an often shamed practice: regifting. Unfortunately,
spoiling your family and friends can add up, and for most of us, our holidays are dependent on consumerism and the supply chain. By regifting a thoughtful gift that you might not found a use for, you are saving both your coin and the earth!
It’s time to destigmatize regifting!!
Regifting Etiquette:
- Still be thoughtful about it. This may seem like a contradictory statement in itself, but only gift items that would not only make sense to the pers
on receiving it, but also bring them joy.
Regifting is not meant to get rid of your unwanted items: if you wouldn’t buy the item for the receiver yourself, don’t regift it.
- Make it cute. Or at least tryyy to make it cute. Add a personalized note and rewrap it at the minimum. And in my opinion, rewrapping adds a personal touch that gift bags don’t always have, t
hough gift bags are often the convenient choice. Here is some inspo! - Be smart about it: don’t regift in the same circle.
- My list of No No items:
- Perishable or expired items; it might just be a me thing, but receiving a box of chocolates or something like that that’s already been gifted makes me uncomfortable. Even worse if it’s a box of homemade cookies.
- Everything opened
- Undergarments
- Anything personalized or monogrammed
- Handmade items. The thought of regifting a handmade item, that someone has put their time and energy into, just makes me sad.
- Go for it:
- Knick knacks, like cute room decor or candle
- Gift sets, like lotions, nail polishes
- Books
- Practical items, like blankets, NEW towels, or small kitchen appliances
I hope that helped! I’d love to hear if you’ve had any regifting horror stories.
Faith, as someone who is recently unemployed during the Christmas season, I think regifting is something I need to consider. I almost never regift because I feel like the people I like giving gifts to do not deserve the remnants of forgotten birthdays and holidays. But one man’s trash is often another man’s treasure (just kidding that is so harsh). I also like that perishable items are the first no-no in your list; I once received a three-year expired gingerbread cookie during secret santa in 4th grade. That is something my memory will not let me forget.
