In this chapter O’Brien writes about the half believable story of Marry Anne. I say half believable story because no one knows if it is actually true because Rat is known for not always telling the truth.
The prompt asks what changed her. I don’t think it was a specific moment that affected Marry Anne but I think it was the cultural differences that did it. Of the short amount of time that she was in the company the differences rubbed off on her and affected her.
The cultural differences were so large between the u.s. and Vietnam. After being there it’s like Marry Anne became a component of the foreign culture. A lot of her decisions were made in spite of the new place she was staying. One of the things I thought was interesting was the fact that she loved the forests. She had this weird interest in the jungle and fell in love with Vietnam. The tongue necklace was not just a necklace it was a sign that she had brought back a piece of the culture she fell in love with. This is a huge example of how the change in culture changes her not a specific moment in Vietnam.
Another part to this prompt asked if it matters that Marry Anne is a girl. Since the setting is Vietnam during the war I think that it does matter that she is a girl. She went to Vietnam to comfort the guys and that would be a lil weird if they brought another guy in to comfort them.
I think that this was a very good blog. I think that you explained the difference between Vietnam and america very well and i found it very very interesting.I also liked how you supported that fact that you think it is important that she is a girl. Keep up the good work!!
Like you, I also agree that the story isn’t entirely believable due to Rat Kiley’s personality of not strictly speaking the truth. I also believe that it wasn’t a single moment that changed Mary Anne but actually many little things that slowly changed her. The differences between the U.S. and Vietnam were to great for Mary Anne to handle without getting consumed by the differences and Mary Anne ended up changing.
I like the points that you made about the cultural differences between America and Vietnam. The forgien difference that you stated I agree with, along with how it connected back to Mary Anne. It was a nice addition to add how Rat is known for shifting the story from the original story line.
Hey Finn! I really enjoyed reading your blog on what really transformed Marry Anne. I think the points that you came up with are very interesting. At first, I didn’t understand what you meant by some of them, but then as I read along, you started to convince me that you are correct. Awesome job!
