When people go to war they tend to change, because all they know when they’re there is just war. Mary Anne went into the war being a good looking and sweet teenage girl, but left a completely different girl. There is many things that shaped Mary Anne into a different person, and one of them is that she started to get interested in the war and everything surrounding it. She started to ask about it, that some guys would find not “normal” because that was a mostly a guy thing to them. Due to her learning and actually liking everything that war brings made her turn into the cold person she ended up being.
In the book it did matter to the characters like O’Brien that Mary Anne was a woman. All the guys saw her at first as a really good looking girl, and they didn’t think that the war was going to change her. In the chapter we see a lot of foreshadowing from O’Brien that she was going to change. I mentioned earlier about her asking about war, but what really showed us that she changed was when O’Brien talked about how she look different. The beautiful bright eyes she once had were gone, and how she would just not care about her appearance. The biggest thing was when she started to wear a green bandanna. By her making all this changes both physical and internally really showed us that she changed. O’Brien even went to the extend of saying how she was lost inside herself. After all the changes that happened to her, the guys started to not find her so attractive anymore because to them a woman was supposed to be feminine and she wasn’t anymore. A woman to them was supposed to be feminine like i said and obviously not cut people’s tongue off, but when she change they all saw her differently.
People go through a lot of changes when we get in a new environment or especially when we grow up. For some people transformation is a big thing that we tend to rush it at times, but for other transformation isn’t a big deal and they just let it happen. One example I can think of is teenagers. A lot of teenagers feel the pressure to change because, we feel the need to fit in. Some because they want to be accepted or others, because we want to find ourselves. When it comes to me transforming, was when i started to know who i was because when my freshman year started i was lost on who i was. Overtime passed I started to figure out everything because, of transforming myself. I would try new things and see what i liked and what i didn’t like. After some time i figured it out, and i’m aware i still have growing up to do but for right now i know who i am. Overall, just like Mary Anne in a way i also found who i am and turned into a different person from who i was when some people first met me.
