I absolutely hate homework. Yes I know that is considered an assignment but I am choosing to write about hating homework and why it should not be a thing. Average high school student spends about 3.5 hours of homework a day. On top of that, they have extracurricular activities, school during the day, and then are exhausted from their long day that started at 6 in the morning. I find that homework causes many mental health problems for students as well as stress. Loads of homework will significantly make a student very overwhelmed, as well as research suggesting “that when students are pushed to handle a workload that’s out of sync with their development level, it can lead to significant stress — for children and their parents”. Even the pressure of homework impacts one and their family. Especially when it comes to asking for help from your parents because then you need to have all the material and teach it to them which makes it more stressful. According to tctimes, 11th grade is the most stressful grade due to homework as well as standardized tests. For me, I had the worst junior year because of how much stress I was in. Like other students, going from school to after-school activities, to ACT tutoring, to homework, then repeat. was a constant stress cycle and everyone I talked to would say the same thing. Entering high school I was always told that Junior year was the most stressful year out of all four, and I never believed it because I felt like all of my previous school years were stressful as well. Until I got to the second semester, it all changed. I probably didn’t go a day without hearing the word “ACT”. The word gives me shivers because of how traumatic my experience was. Parents being on top of kids with this also does not help. With your parents telling you to start studying or do your homework, it makes you not want to do it anymore. I had so many conversations with my parents about standardized testing that I simply could not do it anymore. In relation, when parents ask about one’s assignments, people that are already stressed tend to raise their voice to their parents and act up. The stress from homework creates family problems due to not communicating with them enough. I have had numerous times where I would come home and my parents would ask me what assignments I have or even how my day went, but because of the amount of stress I am in. Although I know that homework is proven to help students know the material, due to the high-stress levels, students are not even trying on homework assignments. Along with this, students need breaks. Weekends do not take away much from students because they mainly worry about the following week. I talked to a few students at Naperville north, and 3 out of 5 said that usually on the weekends they have fun and go out, but the moment they are home they constantly stress about a unit test they have, a project, or homework assignments. These assignments being built up on top of students doesn’t give them a break and they can’t focus on anything else. School is already a full-time job. Waking up at 6:00 am and having school until 3:00 pm is enough. Adding an additional three hours of homework on top, then repeating it makes students not want to do assignments and take a step back. It is asking a lot of a student to do that as well as have them do extra assignments. Also according to vittana.com, they state “there is no evidence that proves homework creates improvements. Survey after survey has found that the only thing that homework does is create a negative attitude toward schooling and education in general.” Homework is not associated with a higher level of academic achievement on a national scale. It may help some students who struggle with certain subjects if they have access to a knowledgeable tutor or parent, but on a community level, there is no evidence that shows improvements are gained. All and all, homework has created so many problems for students making their lives more and more stressful. It is not fair for students to have to do school for 8 hours, then spend another 3 hours on homework, and have after-school events as well. We need a break, therefore, I pose that students should not have homework.

I have to say that a majority of high schoolers would more than agree with your sentiments towards homework. It definitely does add stress on top of the stress that is already induced through our extracurriculars and other things including standardized testing. It also takes time away from our social life, which could potentially be a hazard to our mental health. I also recall reading that homework was originally created as a punishment for students, but now it is basically mandatory. That being said, one thing I want to point out is that doing my homework has helped me in some of my classes. This is especially shown in math or science classes because they are subjects that require a lot of practice. If I did not get that outside practice I would definitely fall behind or be incapable of answering any questions without my teacher’s help. I also understand that some things like reading a book are not necessarily the best things to dedicate class time to, which is why they are assigned to us as homework. However, I do think there should be a balance and it would be really nice for teachers to recognize the stress they are causing on the students and really help instead of harming our mental health.
