Things that seem to be defining my year

  • bread

My good friend Esther keeps buying me bread from her workplace. This started off as a pretty normal situation, but the amount of bread that she brings to my house is frankly alarming. This bread consists of loaves, milky bread, kimchi bread, bread rolls, and more that I can’t remember. This year, every celebration, loss, hangout, birthday, etc. have been defined by BREAD. I’ve consumed lots of carbs this year so it definitely deserves a place on this list. I don’t regret it at all.

  • y2k playlist

This playlist consists of 2000s hits, ranging from Britney Spears to Gorillaz to Destiny’s Child. I made it this semester, along with other people at my first-semester lunch table. These are songs that most people know the words to, so it’s fun to blast in the car with a group. I highly recommend this!

  • movie nights

Watching a movie alone is fun, but it’s just as fun to watch one with your friends and make it your whole personality for the next 2 weeks. My favorite movies from these nights have been Napolean Dynamite, 21 Jump Street, and Clueless.

  • american football (the band)

My biggest accomplishment this year is giving my friends an obsession with midwest emo almost as big as mine. The only thing better than living in the midwest is romanticizing it!

  • romanitcizing things

Sure, call this corny, but what’s the point of living if you don’t find beauty in the dullest moments? Obviously, there’s a line to be drawn on what you can romanticize but there’s no harm in romanticizing things that might be mundane. Maybe this is important to me because it’s my senior year and I want to appreciate the little moments that I might lose soon. Anyway, the next time you drive in the rain, put on Fearless by Taylor Swift and think about how the street looks when it’s just rained, and that there’s a glow off the pavement.

  • Starbucks???

I was never a really big fan of Starbucks until this year, specifically until off-campus lunch. Every time our group goes out, we ask the futile question of “Where should we go??”. I don’t know why we bother, because the answer is almost always Starbucks, and I always get the same non-coffee drink. Also, hot drinks>>iced.

  • food lockers

A few of my friends and I have communal snack lockers to which we all have the combination. Their existence is a testament to the generosity of humans, as they have saved my life on many occasions.

  • losing things……..

2 wire headphones, AirPods, google pixel bud, water bottle, jacket, wallet. I would not like to elaborate.

  • Protein bars

I practically live on these!! I blame my parents for this addiction as they buy the huge boxes from Costco and they’re often the only snacks in the house, other than raw ingredients for some reason. If I’m lazy in the morning, I’ll throw 3 of them into my bag and then regret it later in the day when I realize they’re the only things I have to eat at lunch. I suppose it’s better than eating raw lettuce and random spices…

  • 8th period study hall

Even when I’m tired, which I usually am by 8th period, the children at my table never fail to make me laugh by being their talkative selves. They are also very smart and we often help each other with calc homework. Lots of love to them! I never know who’s going to be there, because sometimes my friends who shall not be named will sk*p PE just to entertain me. Thanks for letting me be a bad influence guys, I love you!

  1. I love this blog it is such a unique idea and really cool to hear about what has been defining your year. I definitely live on Starbucks this year I love it and off campus lunch has changed my life. Having a friend to bring you bread sounds so amazing and like a friend I definitely need. Your food locker is such a smart idea and so fun for you and your friends to share. And lastly, I too have an 8th period study hall, and I skip it maybe like 2-3 days a week.
