top (?) 10 sadgirl/sadperson/sadboy songs

It’s completely acceptable for you to lay on your floor and pity yourself sometimes, don’t let anyone convince you otherwise. You don’t even have to be sad to join the party! All of these are well known and popular enough to be good for most people’s tastes, hopefully! Also, enjoy the picture I found on google images that was definitely posted on Tumblr at some point with some hipster caption I’m not cool enough to relate to.

  1. Only Ones Who Know by The Arctic Monkeys
    1. I am a huge Arctic Monkey fan so maybe I’m biased, however, I did limit myself to putting only 1 AM song on this list. The chords in the intro are quite sorrowful themselves and Alex Turner’s voice only adds to that mood. This song just makes me kind of drowsy and sad in a nice way, if that’s a thing (but maybe that’s because I’m writing this at 11pm).
  2. Escape from LA by The Weeknd
    1. Sad Abel = sad Ayesha 🙁 I really appreciated the vulnerability of After Hours, and I think that this one is one of the most open songs on the album. His voice also is perfect for sad songs, it’s super emotional and usually on the higher side. Escape from LA isn’t my favorite of The Weeknd’s, but it definitely deserves a spot on this list.
    2. I’m fighting for my soul, Constantine
And it’s slowly burning, it was never cheap
If you see what I seen, you wouldn’t sleep
  3. Us and Them by Pink Floyd
    1. This is probably one of my favorite songs so I’m actually not sure if it makes me happy or sad when I hear it. The saxophone in the beginning is super mellow and it complements the lyrics as it’s played between verses further in the song. You don’t need to do an analysis on the lyrics to understand they’re dark- but in this case, I recommend looking up the genius lyrics for deeper meanings just for fun!
    2. “Haven’t you heard it’s a battle of words?”
      The poster bearer cried
“Listen, son,” said the man with the gun
      “There’s room for you inside”
  4. All Too Well by the queen herself, Taylor Swift
    1. As most of you know, Old Taylor is notorious for her breakup songs. Although I do feel bad that she had to go through so many heartbreaks, I thank her for the songs of my childhood! Also, any Swiftie knows the bridge to All Too Well is iconic. Overall, this is a great song to know all the lyrics to and blast in the car with close friends. I’ve done it, amazing experience!
  5. Passing Out Pieces by Mac DeMarco
    1. Mac DeMarco is perfect for an Indie main character moment, and as you know, we are all main characters of our own lives. If you disagree with that, then let me say that you’re the main character of MY life. Take advantage of this and romanticize your sadness with this art about overexertion, lost youth, and misunderstandings.
    2. I’m passing out pieces of me, don’t you know nothing comes free?
  6. Lover, You Should’ve Come Over by Jeff Buckely
    1. The album Grace is one of the goats (and thank you Celina for introducing it to me a long time ago)!! I think that (along with Hallelujah) this song is the most beautiful on the album. I don’t know what else to say other than it has really good guitar and Jeff Buckley had an unreal voice.
  7. I Fall in Love Too Easily by Chet Baker
    1. A classic!! I discovered this song in middle school when I started doing my homework to the Godsent Spotify playlist called Late Night Jazz. I still use it to this day! But this song is liquid gold and honestly addicting to listen to. Especially when it’s raining.
  8. Perdida by the Stone Temple Pilots
    1. I wasn’t a huge Stone Temple Pilots fan (aside from their popular songs) before I heard this album. It came out in 2020 and it’s very much not-grungy, which some fans probably hated, but I thought it was a good thing. The song itself is very mellow and the acoustic guitar makes it comforting, in a way. I think that’s why I like it so much, the instrumentals convey a sense of warmth and understanding while not being super cheerful or energetic.
    2. I know the changes aren’t the ones you seek
I’m lost in circles most the time
  9. Do Me A Favor- AM
    1. I LIED but I’m not sorry because this is worth it. The song talks about a relationship on the brink of failing, and Alex Turner’s British mannerisms (accent, expressions, etc) puts it over the top. Mind you, he’s the only acceptable Brit. Anyway, I don’t know of just one word that sums up AM style rock because I feel that it’s a blend of different kinds, but I do know that this song is perfect for being sad in a cool way.
  10. I know it’s Over by the Smiths
    1. This song has gotten very mixed reactions from the people in my life but to me, it is simply perfect. It’s very clear about the end of someone’s life and their regrets- so of course, it’s sad. The album The Queen Is Dead (I could do a whole separate analysis on it) has cheerful tones even though a lot of it carries depressing meanings. The instrumentals of the song are lively, but the profound emotion in the lyrics cut deeply.

  1. All Too Well, man. I was listening to that song the other day and it really hits man. The vulnerability in her voice and complex lyrics really make the song what it is. I hope you know about Taylor rerecording her album, and her Red album is coming out on November 12th. So I am making sure to listen to All Too Well, as well as the All Too Well 10 minute version! Something many Swifties won’t be able to handle. I also love the Weeknd. They are an artist that I feel is so misinterpreted because it seems like he is only known for his more upbeat songs like Blinding Lights, and Save Your Tears. I really appreciated this blog and have some new songs to be sad about.

  2. Ayesha, this recommendation is beautiful. Validate feeling pitiful! I also enjoy the double Alex Turner feature. His vocals in The Only Ones Who Know transports me to some sad, grey London alleyway. Do Me a Favor pulls me back into 7th grade when I exclusively listened to AM and made it my whole personality. I am very glad to see a fellow fan. Mac DeMarco’s Salad Days album is so upbeat but the lyrics and sound give it a sort of sad, washed out feel. I also love I Know it’s Over as much as I despise Morissey. The others I need to give a listen! Here are some more sad songs you might like
    High Tops– Del Water Gap
    Sad Saturdays– JOBA
    Saccharine– Atta Boy
In Lust We Trust– Steve Lacy
    Fade into you– Mazzy Star
    What you heard– Sonder
    Alison– Slowdive
    Advice– Alex G
    Trying your luck– the Strokes
    Bran-New Lovesong– The Pillows

  3. I’ve only heard of one of these songs (All Too Well) but regardless I thought your descriptions of the themes, instrumentals, etc. were intriguing! I especially liked how you listed specific lyrics from each song – I personally am a little bit obsessed with collecting favorite song lyrics. I’ll be sure to listen to all of these and let you know what I think.

  4. Ayesha,

Like you I could talk about music forever. And I also find guilty pleasure in laying on my bedroom floor and staring at my ceiling while listening to a certain set of songs for an unnecessarily long period of time. I would honestly argue that this process is a necessity in everyone’s lives because it allows for reflection and an opportunity for our minds to wander – and the songs you recommended are perfect for this. “Only Ones Who Know,” will forever be one of the greatest songs to exist. Let me know if you ever want any recommendations, because I will be more than happy to have an excuse to talk about music!

  5. Hi Ayesha! I have only heard of a couple of these songs, but honestly I am so glad you made this list because I am always looking for new music. Also I can definitely relate to this mood- especially during the fall, sometimes laying on the floor and listening to music is all I want to do when I get home. Although most of these songs are new to me, I am excited to try them out!
