  1. Abraam,
I found similar difficulty in reading the poem. The flow is all out of whack, and it makes it extremely difficult to piece together. I really like your point about the diss of scientists and philosophers. He, as an artist, may have a bit of bitterness towards scientists and philosophers because society typically places more emphasis and gives praise to scientists and philosophers, rather than artists, like poets. I also agree with the point about not just targeting scientists and philosophers. I think it is quite difficult to find one place to take blame, especially because there are people who are conscious about climate issues in those fields. Lastly, I think the conclusion you came to about the meaning of the poem is very accurate. He is using this as social commentary on climate change.

  2. Abraam,
At first glance, it would seem like this poem would be relatively easy to dissect as it’s pretty short. But as you mentioned, with the structure disrupting the flow, I found that this was a much more complex poem to analyze. The free verse allows for much more creativity in terms of the actual content, and the spacing in between lines I feel gives the reader time to process and gain a better understanding of this poem. I agreed with your point about humans abusing and taking advantage of the Earth, and the shift from the philosophers to scientists definitely helps the reader to make that connection, though it wouldn’t be something I’d notice during a first read.

  3. Hi Abraam! Your essay was super interesting, I didn’t even know that “free verse” was a thing. I like the approach you took with analyzing this poem, really taking the text and translating it almost so that you could get a better understanding of the meaning, I took a similar approach with my essay. I also like how you really focused on the parts of the poem that were most confusing to you and sort of brushed over the bits that were more obvious so that you could go more in depth with the other parts. I also like how instead of sharing what you determined the meaning behind the poem was in your introduction, you left it to the conclusion, it really made me feel like I was solving this puzzle of a poem with you as I read your essay. Nice work!

  4. Hi,
Upon reading this poem and your essay trying to dissect it, I found myself agreeing with a lot of what you had to say (including, but not limited to the confusion about this interestingly structured poem). I think it was interesting how you used Greek mythology to try to decipher the meaning and that it could definitely be a part of the deeper connotations and actual intended (or perceived) meanings of this poem. Good job with the essay!
