  1. You are most definitely right, getting a book for your birthday is almost as bad as getting clothes. However, I found it more interesting that the second Percy Jackson book really stuck to you. I personally didn’t really find it to enjoyable to read, yet, I can see why you became emersed in the monsters, Greek gods, and characters that made up the book. Riordan does a great job making the characters more human and relatable, even if they are a half-man half-goat thingy.

  2. I agree that connecting with the characters, however fictional they might be, is one of the many joys of reading. Additionally, when the author humanizes them by giving them faults, I can sometimes see myself in them because I connect with their faults and emphasize. Even if the characters do not share many characteristics with me, I still enjoy seeing other perspectives and understanding how they navigate their problems.

What would you say the primary purpose of literature is? Based on this post I think you would say that “the primary purpose of literature is to entertain and for the audience to enjoy what they are reading”. Would you say you are aligned with this statement? (That part is in quotes because it was taken from one of the questions on the initial Critical Reading Survey)

  3. I completely agreed when you wrote, “Having read books for school, I wasn’t interested in reading some during my free time.” This has unfortunately been my thinking as well ever since Jr. High. Also, Percy Jackson was one of my favorite series next to Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. Like you wrote it’s the characters and worlds that are created by the author that makes these series so enjoyable, being able to get lost in an entirely new world with new people is exciting. Although I didn’t read the other Rick Riordan series, I have heard great things about them, and even though they would be easy to read now they might still be enjoyable if you are looking for another series.
