  1. Abraam, I completely and whole-heartedly agree with you. Cereal is not a soup. It never was, it itsn’t now, and it never ever will be. Cereal and soup are completely different categories, and they should never be combined. Sure, maybe cereal fits the definition of a soup, but to that I say so what? Who cares if it fits the definition? It’s like saying a platypus fits the description of a duck because it has a tail and a beak but does that mean it’s a bird? NO IT DOESN’T. Did my argument I just used make any sense at all? NO IT DOESN’T, but it’s more valid than the arguments people use to say cereal is a soup, I know that for sure.

On the same note, a hotdog is not a sandwich. Just because they might fit the definition of a sandwich does not mean hotdogs are sandwiches. They are completely different categories. THERE IS A REASON WHY PEOPLE CALL IT A HOTDOG AND NOT A HOTDOG SANDWICH, OR A HOTDOG SUB, OR A HOTDOG HOAGIE OR GRINDER OR WHATEVER THE HELL YOU CALL YOUR SANDWICHES. Why? BECAUSE IT AINT A SANDWICH.

In conclusion, I agree with you. Thank you for your time.

  2. While I agree with your point, I sometimes get confused by these concepts in itself. In simple, and quite brashly (I apologize)… why does it matter? The point of these discussion is t to incite discussion and argument, not to find an answer. For your answer that cereal is not soup, there will be another argument arguing the opposite. We find this with hotdogs and sandwiches as well. Everyone must have an opinion on the topic, and if asked, they should have the reasoning to back it up or join the other side. I don’t think we need to polarize these topics. While I think it is an interesting for discussion, these conversation have started to incite anger in some, taking it past a point where it really deserves it.

  3. I feel like another reason that cereal would not be considered a soup, is because of culture. Sure, technically people could find ways to argue that it is a soup. However, basically nobody thinks this way and people think of two completely different things for soup and cereal. It just feels wrong to oversimplify food categories as that would mean that it would include other items when it should not (ex. ketchup as a smoothie). I like your take on what sets cereal aside from soup. I never really thought about the fact that what sets cereal apart is the lack of need to actually cook. I just tried to imagine cereal as a soup and I simply could not.

  4. Hey Abraam! This is a very intriguing question to ask 🙂 To me, I’ve always considered the sugary milk you get from putting a sweet brand of cereal in a bowl of milk as the “soup”, and the cereal bits as the accessories to the soup (like the broccoli in a broccoli cheddar soup, for example)! While I definitely understand your argument, I feel like there’s more to soup than the dictionary or society might allow us to see! Sure, is it a conventional soup? Definitely not, but in my opinion, any liquid that you can consume alongside a solid can be considered a soup – irrespective of the temperature (cause you can have cold soup too hahahahha)

  5. Hey Abraam! Personally, I feel that cereal is something exquisite. As someone whose favorite cereal is coco puffs, I consider the chocolate-flavored milk to be a delicious beverage to wash down the crunchy solids of the cereal itself. With this being said, I would disagree that cereal is a soup, as both the liquids and the solids of the dish would be considered one dish, rather than compliments.
