A huge turning point for me is a story I was told of over the summer by my uncle. He told me why and how he choose the career choices earlier in his life that have shaped the rest of his life. All of this was told to me in mid summer when me, my Uncle and my Dad were all driving on the highway on our way to a concert. We were just making jokes about our funny experiences in life when my Uncle began to share with us some of the some of the past jobs he’s had, where’s he worked and details on how he became who is he today by finding what he loved to do in life. He went into detail about how one of his first jobs was a flight attendant for United Airlines. He deeply enjoyed traveling, seeing the world and meeting people everywhere he visited. My uncle worked for United for 6 years and traveled as much as he could for work and for free on his own time. It was a great opportunity to make decent money and be happy doing what he loved.
One of the biggest reasons for me wanting to become a flight attendant is my desire to see the world and experience different cultures. Trying new foods that are popular all around the world is the one thing I am most looking forward to. In my opinion ,the most important requirement to being able to become a flight attendant is being good talking with people and getting to know them. Talking about their travels will help me understand where I may like to go. So just being friendly and sociable with people you are working with and people your are helping to serve as a flight attendant is crucial. I feel like this is something I can do easily, just as my uncle did.
In order to be a flight attendant you not only have to be comfortable with spending so much time on airplanes, but it’s also a smart idea to learn about the parts of airplanes and possibly know how to fly one. Being in a cramped space in a plane for hours or even an entire day at a time takes a lot of patience and motivation to still do your job to pleasantly work with people who are flying. It’s also important to not fall asleep when you shouldn’t or get grumpy after not getting sleep. Speaking of sleep, it’s crucial to get enough sleep yourself so you’re not falling asleep on the job and having a hard time getting used to the time zone changes you’re guaranteed to encounter while flying. Your sleep schedule might be off for a day or two on a regular basis. Another thing that my Uncle told me was it’s super important to be able to wake up early . Setting your alarm when you have to wake at an extremely early time and actually getting up when the alarm goes off is something you have to be able to do all the time. You must be able wake up immediately, gather your things and head to the airport. The passengers are counting on you being on time to get to the plane and have everything prepared for them. So, the skills of time management and organization are key to success as a flight attendance.
My biggest reward for being a flight attendant is finally making it to an destination that you’ve always wanted to visit. After a long flight it would be worth it when you land somewhere you’ve always wanted to visit and be paid to get there. My Uncle shared with me that traveling all over the world and the excitement of seeing something new never gets old. This is what Jonathan loved the most about being a flight attendant.
For me, the biggest benefit of being a flight attendant is the reward you get for working for an airline is getting much cheaper or free airline fares to go places on your own. The airline pays for travel and sometimes free hotel rooms. This is also a benefit for the employee’s family and sometimes, especially, if it’s the weekend, you get to stay in the city or country for the weekend and sight-see or hang out until you have to go back to work. Getting the opportunity to go to new parts of the America or other countries is incredible.
My love for travel is what could make this job truly worth it for me. I’m so glad I’ve heard my Uncle’s story about his cool job, travels and adventures so that I could use his helpful advice to help me become successful and get off to a good start if I decide to become a flight attendant.
