My life in music

Hello, my name is Gavin Drummond. These next songs will help me describe my life to you the reader. please enjoy

1.Closure- Trevor Daniel

Overall this so is about looking forward rather than getting suck on failures.  For example, the chorus to this song goes    “If it’s over, then it’s over
Do not hit my line just ‘cause you need closure
You said it yourself, you don’t want me
Now I’m fine on my own, and you’re lonely”

This shows two different takes on a break-up. First is the ex-girlfriend who is unable to move on the failed relationship and has stayed the same person. Then there’s Trevor Daniels, who uses this failed relationship as a learning experience and uses these lessons to improve in the present, and he does not need closure as he has moved on. I strive to be like this as I always want to look towards the future ranter than ponder on past.

2. 4 min convo- Boogie Wit da Hoodie

This song is about reality when one becomes famous, everybody wants to become your friends and you are the center of attention. The song literally starts ” I woke up to 99 missed calls, that’s like 99 people I probably pissed off” when your being looked under a microscope your flaws show. This song overall reminds me of two things. The first being always shows your best you to the public and never lets the public business move. The second is to surround yourself with people with the same goals if the people around you don’t push you to reach a goal.

3.Broke and Stupid- Joyner Lucas

“Being broke is bad, but being stupid is whats really really bad”-  I like this song because it debunks the value of money. A lot of people believe money success comes with money, although this isn’t inherently wrong it is not 100% the truth. My best real-life example is Pro Overwatch player Dafran who was a cook at Mcdonald, making a minimum wage from 9-5 then grinding Overwatch 5-9. Dafran is now has a Networth of about 2.5million dollars. Dafran made his name from doing something he loved but he also played the game of life right. Currently, I am doing something similar, I go to school 6-3 and grind Overwatch 4 pm to about 2 am, it is not easy, but I wouldn’t trade the world for the hours I put into Overwatch.

Is Technology Bad for students

Innovation and technology can be extremely beneficial but it can have a negative impact on students.  One of the great things about technology is that can be beneficial when it comes to exams. There are numerous sites that are dedicated to helping students study.  Sites like Quizlet allow you to utilize vocab cards, hone test-taking skills and games that help you learn a concept. There are more sites such as Khan Academy that teach almost every subject imaginable and are easily searchable for the skills a student is trying to learn.  There are many students who use this site to help prepare them for the college boards.Image result for technology student

Students can also benefit as teachers have been able to utilize technology as a teaching tool in the classroom.  Teachers can monitor students in class as they use the computer and make individual corrections that are specific to the student.  Teachers can also use Quizlet or Kahoots to create their own content to match their particular teaching style and objective. This type of utilization of technology is helpful as it provided immediate feedback to the teacher and student so that progress can be monitored and deficiencies can be identified and corrected early in the teaching process.  This allows teachers to make corrections and help students before the final test so that the opportunity to succeed is enhanced.

Homework can be aided by technology as there is an on-demand stream of information that is available.  Without the internet, students would have to wait until the next day to get clarification on how to complete a task.  Many of the teachers draw their lessons from online sources and the students can easily find similar sources and have any questions clarified by searching for a specific question.  Technology can also increase communication between the student and teacher as a question can be sent over canvas and responded to more immediately than having to wait until the student is in the actual classroom.

While technology can be helpful, it can also be harmful when it relates to education. There are positives to the teaching platform, too much connectivity can also be harmful   It leads to unrealistic expectations that the teacher should be available on demand and that the student should be working excessively outside the actual school day.  Homework assignments that are due on the weekend or when a student is sick takes away from the much needed respite from school and the stresses it places on the student.  Technology can also be distracting as the student has easy access to non-school related activities and can create a time management crisis for the student.

Technology can be a distraction in class because students are on their phones during class an not paying attention to the teacher and the lesson being taught.  In the article, Research continually shows how distracting cell phones are — so some schools want to ban them it says, “They wrote down 62 percent more information in their notes, were able to recall more detailed information from class”.  Since students are on their phones a majority of the time in class, they are missing out on a great deal of opportunity for in person learning.  Students begin to rely on technology and miss out on the subtleties of real life interaction, which causes greater harm to the student in the long run.

Mary-Ann the killer

In the chapter ” Sweetheart of Song Tra Bong” The character Mary-Ann is introduced as she is new to Vietnam. It is very interesting to see how she is stripped away of her innocence and is turned a cold-blooded killer. The question I am here to answer today is what changed Mary-Ann and was it because she is a woman. Personally asking if this is a gender issue is not plausible as this same process happened to most of the male characters as well without the same outcome.  Personally I believe this is an ignorance issue as even today many citizens have no idea what it is like to serve in the military. Only those who have experienced violence can truly understand what Mary-Ann has gone through.  To explain, at the start of Mary-Ann’s journey in Vietnam she says,

“”You just don’t know,” she said. “You hide in this little fortress, behind wire and sandbags, and you don’t know… Sometimes I want to eat this place. […] That’s how I feel. It’s like this appetite. I get scared sometimes—lots of times—but it’s not bad. You know? I feel close to myself. When I’m out at night, I feel close to my own body, I can feel my blood moving, my skin and fingernails, everything, it’s like I’m full of electricity and I’m glowing in the dark—I’m on fire almost—I’m burning away into nothing—but it doesn’t matter because I know exactly who I am. You can’t feel like that anywhere else.” (Sweetheart of the Song Tra Bong.150)

Although this quote is long it shows that Mary-Ann doesn’t understand that everyone and everything is trying to kill her yet. She is in a heightened state believing everything is a threat and is hyper vigilant to the perceived danger around her.  The truth is one cannot be peaceful if they are not capable of violence. If one can not be violent, they are not peaceful, they are harmless. Mary-Ann is capable of experiencing peace as she has been violent in the past. She is just not in a place to do so at this point.

The phrase “Love not war” is thrown around a lot and I always respond the same way; What do we do if love doesn’t work?   What people seem to forget is that the government does not want to go to war as it is a last option. That is why diplomacy exists.  If America was attacked by North Korea it is unlikely that the first response will be to try and “love” Korea. President trump has met with Kim Jung Un on multiple occasions to avoid having to go to war with each other. America is peaceful until attacked, just like Mary-Ann, Mary-Ann wants to have fun in Vietnam until her life is threatened then she becomes a ruthless killer. In conclusion peace, is not always an option and when a peaceful person is put in a real-life threatening situation there are only two options, to fight or die.Image result for war

Marvel and the Military

Heroes in the Marvel universe are based in the military. The first Marvel hero, Captain America
was a soldier who underwent an experiment to become a super soldier. Tony Stark, Bruce Banner and
SHEILD all have roots or connections to the military. The idea of the military and its purpose are seen as
common themes throughout all of the various comics. Fighting for “truth, justice and the AmericanImage result for marvel shield
Way” is seen as the basis for both superheroes and the military.

The propaganda arm of the military helps to define the mission of the various military actions that our country has been involved in throughout the past century. Marvel comics has mimicked that same propaganda line as our soldiers helping to ensure that our way of life is not compromised. Many of the themes that are presented throughout the comic book mirror the idea that a foreign invader or domestic threat is looming to ensure that we lose the freedoms we enjoy. What happens next is often that the hero needs to overcome a moral crisis in order to win the day. That moral crisis helps humanize the hero and connects the public in a way that the military uses footage of soldiers helping build homes and water purification for the countries we have invaded or destroyed. This parallel of good deeds and moral existential crisis is what helps put both the soldier and the superhero on the same level.

The underlying message regardless of the intent is that the superhero and the soldier are
needed. They are necessary to ensuring the freedoms we enjoy are not infringed upon. Due to this we
often are able to overlook actions they take as long as the consequences of those actions benefit the
general population in the long run. The Hulk can smash a city block or Tony Stark can blow up a building
and it is OK because they are fighting evil. This mentality allows the military to engage in behaviors we
would find atrocious, but are willing to overlook, because the outcome is one we agree with. The
incident in which the US military under President Obama blew up a Doctors without Borders hospital
and then ran it over with a tank to destroy any evidence of American wrong doing. This atrocious action
was minimized as was Hulk destroying a city street, because in the end, it is mostly the bad guys who
suffered the most.

This is not to say that soldiers are not heroes. They put their lives on the line voluntarily so that the public can continue to enjoy the freedoms we have been blessed with for the past two hundred plus
years. Marvel heroes and soldiers are heroes and victims at the same time. They are often used by governments to attain goals that may not always be in line with their perceived purpose. Marvel heroes and soldiers do their best to ensure that the American Way is maintained, and we as recipients of this allow them some leeway in how they get there, as long as we benefit in the long run.

All About me (Gavin Drummond)

Hi, my name is  Gavin Drummond, a 16-year-old male attending Naperville North High school.

My life began on February first, two thousand 3 in Oswego, Illinois. I am the youngest of the siblings even though I only have one sister. My sister Elaina Maria Drummond, who is currently attending The University of Kentucky, has enjoyed the slow life on a farm and hobbies like horseback riding and agriculture. I, on the other hand, am much more into the fast life in a big city full of technology and advancements. This can be shown my favorite hobby esports or playing video games. I fell in love with online gaming starting at a young age with my first game Zoo Tycoon. The idea behind Zoo Tycoon is to build a zoo and get it to a five-star rating. Although I personally never cared about the true objective of the game, I still had a blast finding the most optimal way to trap visitors in a pit of Tigers. I played games like this and also many other small games until 2009 when the videogame “Minecraft” was released and I knew I had to play it. The best part of Minecraft is that there is no objective, as long as the player (aka Me) wanted to survive, explore, build they could do it in Minecraft. There are three modes, Survival, Creative, and hardcore, I spent my time mostly in survival. The idea of making masterpieces from scratch was always satisfying to me, and the funny thing is that it still is. I have played Minecraft for 10 years now with both friends and alone. I have learned how to automate mechanics like mob spawns and fishing to optimize materials gained. I have made a lot of friends but most notably is my friend Beltminer who I met in 2015. Beltminer and I favorite thing to do in Minecraft is to play a minigame called UHC. In UHC teams of two are put into a world where they cannot regain health points. To me, this is the perfect blend of survival and player verse player combat. I basically played UHC every day for 2 years until the release of this new game called Overwatch. Overwatch is a team-based first-person shooter 6v6 game where the main objective is to pick the 6 of the 32 different hero’s of Overwatch then either attack or defend an objective from another six players. Although I did not immediately fall in love with this game Beltminer wanted to try it and I slowly realized the masterpiece it is. Since early 2017 I have played in

Overwatch competitive scene climbing the ranks attempting to win a tournament called “Open division” to become a professional player. On top of this, I have also joined The varsity Overwatch team as an administrator and helped the team win the state finals. Overwatch has become a passion and a dream to me and I am very determined to succeed, and I hope to one join the professional scene called “Overwatch League” or “OWL” abbreviated.
