About me
Hey! My name is Alyssa Helm and I’m 17. In terms of my personal life, I have one older brother who’s currently a Junior at Western Illinois. I also have two beautiful dogs that undoubtedly worship me. One is 3 years old and is a fun loving and crazy puggle/mut, Joy. The other is her disapproving victim who is more mellow, Hope, who is 9 years old.
Right now, college is extremely scary to me and I’m in the process of just applying everywhere and hoping I get in somewhere. Probably not the best method, but it makes me feel more secure since I’m not very great at making decisions. In saying that, I am not completely sure what I want to spend the rest of my life doing, but I’m exploring a few different areas, nursing environmental conservation, and music education. They’re all kind of at different ends of the occupational spectrum but hopefully I’ll figure it out. They all seem pretty reliable and I could see myself succeeding in all of them, so I’m a teensy bit confused at the moment.
I spend most of my time doing performance of some type. I spend most of my time at Show Choir, about 8 hours per week, sometimes more when we have all day Saturday rehearsals. I also do theatre and performing and portraying other characters on stage. I also enjoy playing the trumpet and am involved in curricular band and jazz band. I really like having band in my schedule and near the beginning of the day because it provides me with an outlet in the morning for me to just focus on making music. The class requires you to be constantly engaged so it’s not a place where you can do your math homework for the next period or try to cram in some last minute studying. You have to be engaged and focused because it’s very evident when you’re not engaged since you have to use both hands constantly. Thus why I may want to go into music education, because I can’t begin to comprehend how nice it must be to be able to do that all day, everyday, and just get lost in the focus it takes to create music.
Speaking of music, my favorite band currently is The Lumineers. I’ve loved them since freshman year and over the summer, rekindled that spark. I saw them in June at a music festival and am travelling across the East Coast to see them in Virginia again, on tour. Their music is just so flawless and the way they love and mean every word they write is so amazing. I like them especially because their songs are applicable to anyone and any situation, but it’s also very evident that there is a specific story. So it’s the perfect medium between mindless music that can be applied to anyone because it has no real substance, and music that is way way too specific to where it’s hard to connect to unless you’ve experienced that one specific thing. Basically they’re awesome and all I listen to.
When I’m not doing extracurriculars, I spend most of my time attempting to sing or searching for something new to watch, usually on Netflix. I get pretty involved with TV shows for short periods of time. When I get any sort of free time or open weekend, I usually end up binge watching a whole series in a few days. I’m a pretty avid watcher and very versed in the area of television shows, so I will probably be giving a few reviews on here.
Overall, I’m excited to explore this new outlet and hope to create some fun stuff for some of y’all to read! It’ll be a fun time and I hope it can become something I do more for fun than for a class. So, I hope this page amounts to be some sort of creation that people find an ounce of interest or joy in. Thanks for stopping by!
